It seems unless you actually "been there" with the urgency, you will just never be sympathetic.  I also don't believe this man intentionally tried to hurt this stewardess.  What this man went through was just wrong.

well.... I don't know, why didn't he just push the beverage cart out of the way? I feel badly for him, in the sense that I don't think he intentionally tried to "interfere with the flight crew", but if it were me, I'd just push the darned cart aside & go.

Sounds like he is going to prevail in the legal case, if the tone of the article is any indication. But I don't think they would have held him for two days unless he was being difficult, do you?

The fact is, after a while many flight attendants get burned out and can't stand passengers anymore, then enjoy the power they have to make them miserable in situations like this. Or, they simply just don't get it.

If I really could not convince them to let me use the other bathroom without getting physical, I think I would have removed my trousers to keep them clean and gone right there! Let her/him deal with the mess and smell for not helping me out.

Of course not all flight attendants are this way, most are incredibly nice. But I have learned to ask forgiveness instead of permission, and to be frank -- and calm -- about my needs.

This makes my paranoia about my disease fly through the ceiling. I feel so embarassed to have to tell the flight attendants of my problem, but I guess I had better do so from now on.

That's why I make sure to check in online and early, and confirm an aisle seat that's close enough to the toilet (but not too close to the toilet). Also, before the flight takes off I speak to the flight attendant in my section and mention that I have a digestive disorder and might need to use the rest-room, even if the 'fasten seat-belt' light is on. They don't need a detailed explanation, and seem fine with that.

My father-in-law has a prosthetic leg, and only has a few inches of leg below his hip, so he's not very stable when he walks. When he flew out here to visit us, his set was in the first row of coach class (handicapped seating) and the only coach class restrooms on the plane were at the back. He asked if he could use the first class restroom and was told no. IMO, the airline put him (and other passengers) in physical danger by requiring him to walk clear back to the rear of the plane. Some of the rules TSA has come up with are ludicrous.

Saw, wait where? On the lap of the person sitting there? When is the last time you flew? At least on airtran there is NO ROOM. I had the cart parked next to my seat while they did about 5 aisles of beverage service and there was no way to climb around it. I had to ask for it to be moved so I could get out. The f/a had to wait for a second f/a to help her move the cart. It only took about 5 minutes but it was moved. Thank goodness it wasn't yet a huge emergency.

Same thing sorta happened to me, although I actually HAVE UC and the flight was preparing to take off.

The plane was actually just on the runway and probably had about 3-4 planes IN FRONT OF IT, when I got up and told the stewardess that I "had to go" to the bathroom. She FLIPPED OUT like I was prepping to highjack the plane or something, although I insisted and said "I have a BOWEL DISEASE...I can't help it, I HAVE TO GO...the plane isn't leaving for another 5-10 minutes". She flipped out some more and said that she'd have to go to the cockpit and tell the pilot to stop or something...and I replied, "Do whatever you have to do, lady" and went to the bathroom (she was actually being VERY RUDE and UNSYMPATHETIC toward my plight).

Took me 30 seconds to drop my load and return to my seat.

I made sure to give her the "stink-eye" of the rest of the trip.

LESSON LEARNED: Try and make sure your flight crew is aware of your DISEASE when you get on the plane. Even though I ALWAYS choose an aisle seat directly next to the bathrooms...apparently that's not enough.
