Antibiotics and UC

I would have no problem to take them.....you should, however, make sure you're taking probiotics...which I see you are.

You have to get rid of the infection.

I've taken antibiotics as needed since diagnosis...I may have had a bit of looser stool sometimes or even diarrhea...but I also was taking my UC meds and probiotics.

FYI: It was my first year of UC and things were gradually improving. I was to the point where I actually thought I wouldn't have it a full year regardless what the Dr's said. (probably b/c I got it instantly and I was showing great improvements) but then I took out a wisdom tooth and started a week or 10 day amoxicillen course. By like the 3rd day I was having liquid blood and the worst pain I had had in my entire life. My UC was severe from the start but had never given me pain or cramps. I cramped and felt like I ate glass and nails after the antibiotics for about 2 months and have never fully recovered. But also, I didn't know what probiotics were and my GI didn't recommend them, he just let me do the amoxicillen without any advice.

i asked my GI regarding this last month.. she said you can take but try keeping the dose lowest you can.

You might try to empty a probiotic capsule in your mouth a few times a day....that could help get you from using antibiotics.

Did the doc say what kind of bacteria you had?

Unless they took a swab of your throat and sent it for a culture, they can't know for sure if it's viral or bacterial....If they did send it for a culture, it should come back with a result saying the type of bacteria and what antibiotic it would be "sensitive" to...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'd be reluctant to start on an antibiotic if it could be viral rather than bacterial...
