Has Antiobiotics ever helped with UC

I find metronidazole (Flagyl) to be extremely effective. In fact, my symptoms had vanished entirely upon concluding my latest round (1.5 grams daily for 2 weeks). Unfortunately, I tend to experience subtle psychological effects after around one week, and metronidazole also happens to be renowned for its ability to induce peripheral neuropathy.

I'm presently experiencing mild success with sulfasalazine, which is technically a sulfonamide antibiotic (although 5-ASA is thought to be primarily responsible for its therapeutic action).

I have never taken antiobiotics for my colitis. But I know that it is a cause of my flare ups.

Taking antibiotics and having UC makes sense to me.  I believe(from my own experience) that Chron's Disease and UC are caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria.  The antibiotics destroy the bacteria, and hence rid the problem temporarily.  Unfortunately, our high sugar diets feed that bacteria and the vicious cycle begins all over again. 

If i were taking antibiotics to clear this problem up, I would supplement it with a good probiotic to replace the normal flora that also is destroyed during an antibiotic regimen.  Then I would change my diet!
