hi i was diagnosed with uc approx a year ago(april 08), i am planning on having another baby but i have had flare ups everyday since i was diagnosed, my symptoms have never gone away, i have tried enemas, i have just finished a 5 week course of prednisolone and i currently take 3 sachets of pentasa per day but nothing seems to work, ive heard its dangerous for your baby while having a flare up, i dont no what to do, help any1!

My GI suggested not getting pregnant while in a flare. Last year shortly after diagnosis, I was in a mild flare and found out I was pregnant (it was a surprise). Around the 12th week I went into remission and stayed there until delivery. Try to get your UC under control first so you can have a worry free pregnancy. Best of luck to you!

I second AMK77's comments-get your UC in good control, and then you should have smooth sailing with your pregnancies. My GI doc says that patients flaring at conception tend to have worsening symptoms, while patients who are not flaring at conception tend to have remission. I can attest to both situations happening to me; I didn't know I had UC during preg #2 and flared horribly in the 3rd trimester (lost 20 pounds while 8 months pregnant-pretty impressive, eh?). I'm almost 20 weeks now with #3, and well-controlled with meds. I haven't felt this great since before my UC diagnosis...this is the best remission I've ever had. It almost makes me want to get knocked up again, just to feel this fabulous...that is, until I hear the hollering and see the messes created by the results of my first two pregnancies!

I third the recommendation to get your flare under control. I went into a major flare up triggered by my first pregnancy and was in the hospital for five weeks. We were so close to loosing the baby every day because of how sick I was and it was hard for me to agree to all the medications to help me, not knowing how they were affecting the baby.

Making sure my slight flare symptoms from 2 weeks ago are well under control before I quit the birth control pills next month. Had a full remission pregnancy with #1 and hoping for the same with #2. Get healthy first!

thanks for all your replies, the problem is getting my flare ups under control ive never not had a flare since i was diagnosed and cant seem to find anything that works so far, i was on a 5 week course of pred, 1st week 40mg then dropped it by 10mg each week til i was off them and the only time it seemed to do anything was the first week when i was on 40mg but the doc didnt want to give me anymore as i put on weight when i was on them, ive gotta go and have another colonoscopy in 2 weeks to see if it has got any worse as nothing seems to be working and i really want to start trying for my 2nd baby, i didnt have uc with my first, the sysmptoms started a few months after i had her, just wish i knew what it felt like to be in remission!
