Just a quick question. My GI didn't want to put me on remicade and imuran at the same time cause apparently studies showed it wasn't to safe. My question is for the people here that are taking both is this a temporary bridging or is this a permanent thing? I'm just curious because I've got to see him this week and tell him I'm flaring up again and that the remicade possibly isn't working.

I don't know how to answer your question well, but I do have a question.... Did your doctor tell you the reason as to why he doesn't want you on both at the same time? I was on Humira and Imuran together for about a year and a half. I'm thinking that he may not want you on both because of immuno suppressors, but I was on both and had no problems at all, I even work in child care and carried on like normal. If that's the case, I hope you can use this as a help to you to get you on the imuran to help you gain remission. Both those drugs helped me get into remission and has kept me there since being off the Imuran. It's a good drug, but.... yeah. Good luck.

My doc took me off of Azthiriopine (Imuran) because there were studies that showed taking the two together might have a risk for lymphoma. Not huge, but he thought it better not to take the chance. I've had no side effects either way....

I'm on both, and it is not temporary. The alternative for me would be surgery and I'm not ready for that. Taking the 2 together was the only way to get out of a huge flare, and ultimately off the Prednisone. I'm currently tapering and am down to 10mg of Pred and appear to be in complete remission.

Personally I think that taking Imuran with Remicade, like me taking Humira with Imuran, doens't hurt as long as it's not permanent. If it helps and works, then is shouldn't be a problem. (personal opinion)

Thanks for your responses. My doctor didn't get into the specifics about why he didn't want me on them at the same time but I figured because they're both cancer causing meds and taking them both at the same time would double my chances. That and they're both immune suppressors that are in the high powered range would also leave me susceptible to infections etc. Originally the idea was to eventually get me on imuran after remicade got me into remission. The main reason was cause it was wayyy cheaper. I wish humira was approved for UC in canada darnit. The idea of mouse proteins in me gives me the willies. Thanks for your comments.

I have recently had my second flare of UC and my GI has prescribed Imuran.

I also work in child care and when I read about what this drug does to your immune system, I started to think I would have to give up the career that i love so much.

Reading your story here, has given me hope!!

So I really can continue my job in childcare and survive the effets of Imuran???

I took both at the same time, well actually 6mp and remicade, but 6mp and immuran are alot alike.
i was in a flare and went to the hospital to start remicade and my dr said it was better to be on 6mp or immuran because it lessened the chance that your body would become resistent to the remicade. Didnt work for me, but i didnt have any trouble with colds or anything like that while i was on them.

Glad to hear you feel more positive about this. I've had my ups and downs too due to the same concerns, but I've kept remission for 2 years but had 1 small flare last year. :-)
