Does the bleeding ever stop?

My mom started her flare up three weeks ago. Had a colonoscopy and for sure she was having a severe flare up. Doc prescribed Flagyl and Pred. She was only on pred for 8 days. She is still running to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. Not a lot of poo it's mostly blood. Will it ever stop????

If you're mom has UC flare up as you described, typically she would be placed on a longer regimen and then tapered down.

     Eight days is not enough of prednisone for a severe flare.  What are her other meds?

When I called her GI the assistant even admitted she wasn't on the steroids long enough. Mom family doc wrote the prescription before leaving the hosiptal. The only other med she is on right now is asacol 2 - 3x daily. It bothers me her doc didn't go ahead and write her a new RX but instead make her wait till the office visit on Tuesday.

This past time, it took me 2.5 weeks of 60mg Prednisone to stop the heavy bleeding.

Dnt worry bleeding will stop, its just a matter of time & finding right medication which suits your body. I have been bleeding since a long time now....lets see how much longer it takes. Take care of your mother diet as well..she needs to eat healthy! Hope she feels better soon.

No medications could stop my bleeding burt Sheldons vitamin E enema technique stopped my bleeding withing a day.

Definately try the vitamin E enemas they worked for me too.  When I use cortifoam as well I always lubricate the tip with vitamin e.  My bleeding stopped with the vitamin E within a week, its worth a try.

It will stop, then it will start, and stop, and start....... and it goes on and on, lol. Vit E enemas are definately a great alternative.

Asacol may be making her bleed worse, see if the doctor will let her switch to Sulfasalazine instead if she isn't allergic to sulfa drugs, and see if things improve.

Since we're still new to all of this, can someone explain about the Vitamin E enema? I've read alittle about it, but still not too sure what it is.

The way I do the vitamin E enema is I use an empty  Hycort bottle that I have and take the vitamin E capsules and poke holes in them one at a time and empty it into the bottle.  I will add a little warm water to it then coat the tip with vitamin E and insert.  I retain it all night.  I will use at least 10 capsules per enema.  I'm not sure how the others do it but this is the way I have been doing it and I find it works great and is not irritating like some of the cotisone enemas that I have used.

I will still use the cotifoam during the day but I try to use the vitamin E in the evening.  It's worth trying.

Don't fell bothered. Prednisone is a potent drug. It's not prescribed lightly. My GI gave me Colazol until the inflammation subsided enough for him to do a partial sigmoidoscopy. He prescribed prednisone only after he was able to make a diagnosis.

Actually, Joylu....way too many doctors prescribe pred far too quickly rather than introducing patients to the first-line meds. That's one thing I've noted while on the forum.

     I've never tried the vitamin E enemas but willing to do so.  I am suffering with ulcerative proctitis and man is it ever stubborn.  My main problem is the pressure, not bleeding yet.  Do you purchase this at the drug store, over the counter?  Right now I am taking the Cort enemas in the evening and Canasa in the mornings as the Cort enema will not stay in.  I also have burning in the rectum.  Will the E enemas soothe this?
