So, I'm new here, my info's in my signature.

Late in 2004, before my UC symptoms evolved into bloody D, cramping, etc, I had constipation and small amounts of blood. Then I started getting the "traditional" symptoms, was diagnosed, etc etc, and am now in remission, I guess.

Anyways, lately, on and off for the past few months, I'll get constipated again. When I go to the bathroom, I'll get clumps of blood and mucus. The next morning I'll usually have a normal bowel movement without blood. Earlier this month, I woke up in the middle of the night with pretty bad D, and threw up four times. Now I'm back to the constipation and blood, and the stools are pale and I'm kinda worried. Anyone else get this sort of thing? I'm going to see my doctor, but I'd like to get an idea of what to expect.

My GI said try not having "constipation" Constipation is an early sign of a flare up for me....it is then followed by mucus&blood..and then things keep getting worse! Infact i would not call it constipation, my problem starts when i am not able to empty my stomach completely due to which i drink 2-3 glasses of water and then rush again after 1 hour or so-it is now that i get mucus & blood first and then the remaining stool part....these r my intial flare up signs.
Remedy: partially successful! I take colon care formula (Psyllium husk) atleast twice a day, with this my constipation improves...but i have realised taking this husk for more than 2-3 weeks reduces its effectiveness so i stop it for a couple of days and start again. I would suggest take high fiber food....that works for me rather low fiber diet gives me constipation next day which leads to a flare up.

A little more to add : I have a Farmers market closeby "sprouts" there i got "Triphla" -remedy for constipation - it is herbal medicine from India(Ayurveda) and it works..so the days i stop Psyllium husk i take Triplha.
I guess, when we get constipation it irritates our colon and leads to a flare up. So controlling flare up right in the beginning should work!

Okay, I don't have much money but I'll try some fiber and maybe some apple juice, that always seems to help move things along. Usually a coffee will do the trick but it didn't so I got a bit worried. Apple juice is healthier anyways. I'll remember the Triphla though, thanks.

If apple juice works for you i would suggest eating one apple a day -it will add fiber to your system - i try to eat 1 apple daily. When i was in mid of my present flare up - i decided to increase intake of fibres- i became very regular with atleast 1 apple a day and later after a month or so my symptoms started decreasing.... dnt know if this apple was the reason as i had also started fresh turmeric + probiotic just a day before symptoms disappeared....then i had a vaccine and then RE-flare....so apple is still a mystery- but my husband says he is sure apple helped me!
But if u have problem with raw fruits and vegetables i guess u should stick to juice only!
BTW, spinach is very good !

Before when I was having more than one bowel movement a day, I tried fiber and it helped decrease them. Apples make me have more. They don't bother me too much, I've been trying them lately. But I'm sure the apples helped you. Pink Lady apples are the tastiest lol

If u r o.k with raw fruit diet - not too expensive remedy - eat 1 apple + canned spinach twice maybe 1 can a day + lettuce + beans .... avoid low fiber: pancakes, pizza, white bread, whatever u feel will not add fiber! use whole wheat flour...do not use all purpose flour....see if this works for you...this is what i follow. Low fiber diet kills me the next day! Try this for a couple of days...there is nothing better than cure through natural food.

My internet connection is very slow.... its taking me ages to post & read your reply... if apples increase your bowel m. then dnt take it...try spinach and other green leaf vegetables...i take mustard greens also.

Hi EP...are you on any other meds except for Aza? You should call the doctor and maybe request some rectal meds to try and get the now limited rectal inflammation under control.

I would also suggest that you eat enough of a healthy food intake and add a fibre supplement to help bulk and soften the stool. Much easier going out that way..lol!

I say you're flaring...best to deal with it quickly.

No, just the one med. I used to be on Asacol 3 pills 3xday but I had to use Prednisone too much with that and since I've been on this I've been pretty much okay. Thanks, and I'll see what my doc says when I go. She was just thinking about lowering the dosage too >.< I've been eating salad and it seems to already be helping XD Thanks!

Hi. Welcome to the forum! I just wanted to say that right before I was diagnosed, I had constipation (really bad) and blood before the typical UC symptoms, too. Hope you feel better soon. Let us know what your doctor says.

Thanks! Yeah, I was confused because my last flares just skipped constipation and jumped right into bloody D. Thank you, and I will. But I can't see her 'til the 6th. >.<

Personally when I have a serious flare up I have to avoid fiber supplements due to the fact that they make things crampier and runnier and whole bunch more fluid comes out. It is usually a very messy ordeal. If you do try things remember to keep a journal or at least tabs on what you changed. I hope I don't sound too pessimistic....I hope you find something that helps. Oatmeal every morning seems to helps a little for me but does not stop a serious flare up. Good luck.

Oh for sure, I'll stay away from bad stuff. It's not serious yet and I'm hoping I can stop it. I haven't started fiber again but a bit of salad each day seems to be helping. Thanks =)

Arc...oatmeal is fibre.

When we mention to start fibre or increase fibre intake to help bulk up the stool from diarrhea or to soften the stool from constipation, it's usually one of the supplements.

There are different kinds of fibre, and salads will help definitely aid in helping too solid of a stool, but with diarrhea, it won't help much...unless you're mixing it with other fibres.

Food wont stop a flare...changes in diet will help some of the stool symptoms as well as comfort level caused by gas.

Now there's less blood but I'm going more often. So I'm changing my diet a lil bit. A little more starchy food. Not too much. Also going back on fish oil and am going to try some other natural things.
