trouble paying for Lialda

Has anyone else had difficulty paying for Lialda? Have just been dx'd with UC, on prednisone and Lialda (so far have rec'd samples from GI doc). It's working but my insurance doesn't seem to cover. Have been quoted $400. Trying to figure out how to make this work, since I am not currently working. Any experience getting on their patient assistance program? shakehead

I am in the P&G program for Asacol (same as Lialda but you have to take more pills per day). It is not a program you can get into if you're working and have insurance. You have to provide tax forms showing low income. You can look up the program for Lialda and see what is required to participate. It makes the drugs 100% free.

DianeLynn, welcome to HealingWell! I'm sorry you had to find us this way, but we are happy to have you join us. The cost of meds can be daunting, but I believe some of the pharma companies are trying to help defray some of the costs by offering different programs. You could also look in to Apriso, which is similar to Lialda (they are both one daily mesalamine drugs). Salix, the manufacturer, has a program that will reimburse you for your monthly co pay (up to $50 per month).

However, it kind of sounds like your insurance might only cover Asacol. Some insurances will only cover the least expensive form of a drug if there are several with the same active ingredient. Asacol works great, it's just a bit harder to use since you have to remember multiple doses over the day. I was doing fine on it, but chose to switch to Apriso for convenience.

Lialda has a special offer on their website. When you join the patient assistance program they send you a coupon to redeem one bottle of 60 1.2mg pills as a free trial that you can redeem through your doctor and pharmacy. For me that would be 15 days since I take 4 pills in the mornings. It might be 30 days of free meds for you if you only take 2 a day. So you could start with that and take it from there?

I have to pay $590 for my Asacol every 90days.  Lialda which I used to take would have cost me $1600.  I can't even afford my Rowasa.  It is $100 a week.  That is with insurance.  When I start my Remicade I will be bankrupt.

I was diagnosed in 1990. I threw away the drugs in 1993. I cured myself gradually through diet and supplements and have been perfectly great since April 2008.

I had the same problem paying for my Asacol, turns out my insurance had a deductable.
