Hello....I'm new to the site...was just diagnosed with colitis a month ago and had the scoped done on my lower bowels.....im going back for a follow up next week. My biggest trouble has been diarhea and terrible stomach cramps and pain when i eat.....i find eating rice has been about the only thing i can eat without it really hurting. Can anyone relate with chronic diarhea with colitis? and could someone kinda tell me what can I expect for treatment when I go for my follow up next week? Thanks in advance for any info!

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry about your diagnosis, just know that you are not alone and will get tons of support here! Your GI will probably discuss meds with you. When I'm in a flare I get the same symptoms as you. You can get meds to help with the pain. I would suggest to start taking Fish Oil and probiotics. Hope you feel better soon!

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of info here. We all can relate to cramping and the frequent D of Colitis. Review the drugs here, so that you will know what to ask for and expect at your next GI visit. I assume you have had your diagnosis confirmed via biopsy during colonoscopy? If so, they should have started you on meds to work on the frequency. Usually they start with Prednisone, or one of the many 5ASA's. I'd say to get the test done -blood work- to determine if you are a candidate for 6MP, as that test takes weeks to get back, and the drug takes months to kick in. Time is not your friend if you do not respond to the easy med.s. Many doc's recommend a BRAT diet, or low residue till you begin healing.

I've been diagnosed with colitis but what kind im not sure of yet.........when i had my scope done my colon was very inflammed and for the past 4 months i've had the terrible cramping and diarhea....i'll know more when i see the GI next wed and he explains more what they found in my biopsies.......All I know right now is that they said I had colitis.....Its terrible cause it seems i'm withering away cause i can't eat anything and when i do it just kills lol.....and soon after the diarhea......thanks for the welcome and i'm finding alot of people here with similar problems. wink

i've not started any medication yet.....they told me that when i go back on wed they will talk to me about medicine then....I'll be glad when I do get some type of relief LOL this has been horrible....I went to a health shop today and got me some aloe vera juice and some Acidophilus tablets...I found some coconut milk as well I've read somewhere that that can help....it's all just trial and error now...seems like rice is the only thing that doesnt flare up my stomach....thanks so much for the support and it is good to have folks share their info...God bless!!!

Dear CLP, welcome to the forum. I think you will find the folks here are awesome with good info too. I got diagnosed in January and they gave me colazal, one of the 5-ASA meds. It took a while for the meds to work for me for some reason, about 8-12 weeks and the longer I am on them, the better I feel.
My experience was that staying on a bland diet was very important until the meds started working. Someone mentioned the BRAT diet, that is bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Probiotics help a lot, make sure to get a good brand. I use VSL #3 and I get it off the internet. There are lots of good brands, just read up on this site and you will find them. My issue with getting well was that whenever I felt better, I would go out and eat too much!! Like pizza, rich foods with cheese etc... then I would be sick for DAYS!!!! I have learned that personally, those foods just don't agree with me. lol... I have IBS on top of IBD, so dairy is rough on me. I also have diverticulitis, so I have to be careful with roughage. Gee, after reading this, you will be happy you "just" have colitis, right?

I am not sure about the aloe vera. I have heard some comments that it can loosen the bowels. You may want to ask others about that one.

yeah my wife got me some probiotics today.....im eager to beat this once and for all......funny thing is i didn't know what was going on with me....i had this awful pain and diarhea and nothing would help me. I tried ammodium and IBS tablets but nothing worked.....I'm sticking to bland foods for awhile...it makes me nervous to think of eating anything else now but at the same time I've lost way too much weight in a short period of time so I'll be glad to get started on my medication come wed when i go to the GI doctor.

Hey CLP, just a thought...don't add too many new things at once. If you do, it will be hard to determine what works and what doesn't (or, if something is causing problems). I know you want to get better, but sometimes it's best to be patient!
