Hi Everyone,
I was diagnosed with this disease about six years ago. I was on remission for a few years while under ASACOL and Mesalamine Rectal. They worked very well, so well that for sometimes I thought I was healed and stop taking them. BIG MISTAKE. I got a terrible flare and it lasted for almost two years. I have seen the worst of this sickness: Diarrhea, loss of weight, depression, and "accidents". I have been very close to take steroids but never did, something I refuse to do because of the side effects I have heard from other people.
Having said all this, I have learned many things. I read "Braking the Cycle", I learned to cook my own food through this book, I learned to keep a record of what I eat and my symptoms. This has lead me to learn inside out what is wrong with my body and how to detect when I am about to have a flare. I have not found a cure, but I am enjoying a better life and trough these very simple steps you might feel better.
0.- Keep taking your medication. According to my doctors dieting doesn't help that much so whatever I will tell you will not do you any harm. But not taking your medication is a mistake.
1.- I believe reading Elaine Gottschall's book helped me to stabilize my health. It's a very and strict diet but it does work. To a certain extent. Your body and my body will react differently but in my case the diet stopped the diarrhea. That was the first step.
2.- Learning to relax. That you will have to learn on your own to avoid getting anxious, nervous, worried. I got sick after altercations with people or stupid arguments. If it means to let people win, but your health is better, let them win.
3.- After your diarrhea has stopped you need to keep track of what foods work and do not work for you. In my case, I discovered that a cabbage tea (just put a few leaves on a pan of water and let it boil for a few minutes) in the morning, afternoon and night allowed me for the first time to have a solid stool. I continued with peeled apples with yogurt. It's important to peel the apple. I had always felt this pain in the upper part of my Colon. Having a few slices of pineapple helped me release that constipation, and be free of that pain. I eat papaya too, it also helped me in the past but now I am more cautious. It's a fruit that can quickly cause diarrhea (if in excess) and this can cause a reversal on your health.
These foods have worked for me. Right now I am taking some risks because I feel much better. I am riding my bicycle almost every day and I have started to eat chocolate, and pasta (occasionally). Do not take any risks until you feel good and you have seen that certain foods do help you. Today I had my first hotdog in two years!
Like I said, this worked for me. You might find other foods that will help you. These are not medications or chemical which I honestly think do not work that well.
I wrote this with the intention of helping someone in my situation. I am grateful I have regained almost 20 lb that I lost, and I feel compelled to let others know.
Hope you also feel better.
I am a Christian person and perhaps I should add that prayer also works. I leave that up to you, but it doesn't harm to ask for some help to God.
