Horrible Face Rash

I was wondering if anyone else had experiend anything similar.  about a week after stopping a 4 month course of steroids I developed horrible red angry looking very dry areas around my mouth.  This has gone on for about 4 weeks and occasionally gets a lot better and I think it is finally clearing and then gets worse again and I'm back to square one.  It is also bumpy and can be spotty, sore and a little itchy.

My Consultant commented on it this week and thinks it may be down to the Azathioprine but from searching on the Internet I think it sounds a little like perioral dermatitis.  I think I have had something similar on stopping previous courses of steroids but don't remember it being this bad and bothering me this much.

Any advice anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Yes yes yes! I have this and I've had it for about a year. It is such a pain in the tush! My doc thinks it might be because of me being on 6mp and a series of cortisone injections had set it off. Because I didn't have it until I started getting the injections. So how I got mine under control is I used a prescription strength steroid (I know, ironic huh?) and then when the rash tamed down I am now maintaining it with prescription Elidel. Also use a mild soap to clean your face such as Cetaphil and don't scrub your face but rather pat it to dry. Do not use any acne medication around this area because it will cause it to dry out more. Are you male or female? Do you use make up? If so, use hypo allergenic kinds and make sure to clean the make up off every night. I still have my rash and if I don't use the Elidel for a couple of days the rash comes back. Very frustrating!

Thank you for your reply and it's nice to know I'm not the only one.  As always, it is another symptom or side effect of the illness!!

I am a female and do use foundation, and lots of it at the moment trying to cover it up!  I get so paranoid about it and always feel like people are looking at it when they're talking to me and I don't always have perfect skin but certainly not usually like this.  I think I better do away with the face scrub I use as well and get something kinder to wash with.  At present, I have only be washing and using E45 cream as it can get so dry but I don't think that then helps with it being so greasy and then ending up spotty as well.

It is just really frustating that a couple of times it has got so much better and I think it is finally clearing and then it's back with a vengeance.  I have a Dr's appointment in just over a week's time to get repeat prescriptions so I plan to talk with him about it then and suggest the treatment you have tried.  My Consultant who noticed it this week suggested an over the counter acne treatment but I have been reluctant to try it as it seems so sore and angry at times that surely it would only make it worse.

I have had something similar to this before as well. I used the original Eucerin creme, not the lotion, the creme. It helped A LOT, and eventually cleared it up, although it did take some time. I had it around my chin and the sides of my mouth. Definitely NOT fun and really irritating... Good luck! :)
