Hi, I am new to this site and i need help. I have had colitis for quite a few years now but it's never been as bad as now. I actually started with Proctitis  of  course it has now spread and is halfway up my colon. I flared up really bad this spring and had to miss quite a bit of work. It affected my joints which swelled up and i couldn't walk. I was on prednisone for a few months but am now taking 8 Pentasa's a day and 2 Imuran. I do not have diarrhea and never have. I have not lost any weight but i bleed alot hence i have to take 3 iron pills a day because my feritin went down to 3 and normal is 40.  I have lots of cramping and of course the urge to go quite alot and don't forget the mucus. I really don't know if diet will help or what i am supposed to avoid. I am starting to dread going out, or eating or drinking anything because i know i will have to go. Any help or advice would be very appreciated. Thank you.

I know how you are feeling, I was house bound for pretty much all of august and september, i had been slowly getting worse since may june time.
I had another colonoscopy which showed I had ulcerative colitis all round my colon stage 3 which was making me really poorly.

I started prednisalone 40mg and it took 2 weeks before any difference was made, a few days before it kicked in I started drinking fresh juices ... made in my juicer ... handfull of spinach, 2 carrots, 2 sticks of cellery ..... i had 2 a day and I felt loads better, in between I ate very bland food ie baked potatoe for lunch with fish, dinner was chicken and rice, breakfast toast. I avoided egg for a week and just carried on drinking juices ... I got wind pm but it wasnt too bad.

I really think juices helped kick start the healing process. If u look on you tube type in colitis juices theres some info on there from sufferers.

Are u in the usa??? if so avoid processed food like the plague!!! I lived in Indiana for 3 years and ate so much crap it made me ill ! Also chineese food !! I had it last night and had 5 bathroom visits in a row!

I take turmeric which helps. Eating starchy foods (bread, noodles, rice, taters) may help til you get out of your flare, then fresh fruits alone may help (or the juice, whatever). Food doesn't affect me a whole lot, but it may help you. There are a few diets, sunflower and spinach, SCD, raw foods. Avoid booze, obviously. And avoid caffeine and energy drinks.

So, you only feel like you have to go but don't actually always have to? Then your inflammation is probably still pretty low, I would try some enemas out.

Thank you Elephantpipe, really appreciate the input. I allready ask the doc if i could do my enemas, but he said no to increase my Pentasa to 8 per day which i allready do. I used to have proctitis but it is now halfway up the colon. I also take 2 imuran a day. I will call my specialist and ask him about the enemas because right now i know that the inflammation is only in the lower part, again ty and i will look into the tumeric.
