It's a probiotic. VSL#3 is over the counter, VSL#3DS is prescript
ion. The DS stands for double strength. The OTC version contains 450 billion bacteria per satchel and the prescript
ion DS version contains 900 billion. I received the prescript
ion from my GI over a year ago but there is only one pharmacy on Oahu, Hawaii that would fill it and that was CVS ProCare ( I believe that's the name, they changed it this past year and I'm not 100% positive and am unable to look it up at the moment, sorry). Hope this helps. Robert

VSL is the strongest probiotic I've found and has some scientific backing. I've ordered it straight from the manufacturer. Last week I asked my GI to prescribe the DS, but the pharmacy called and said it isn't covered by my insurance. The pharmacy said they would order it if I wanted it, and the price they quoted me was less than I've been paying to get it directly from Sigma Tau! (I guess that's how they finance the free shipping in the neat freezer pack....?)
I'm going to go pick it up later and I'll see what they've ended up giving me, the regular or the DS, etc.
