Azathioprine and its side-effects!

Hi everyone. Was wondering if anyone has suffered side effects , or knows of anyone that has suffered side effects from Azathioprine. I'm not complaining, as I've been symptom free for a few months now, it's just that i seem to be tired all the time, and my joints, especially my back and knees are killing me all the time. Also, I'm loosing my hair! Any thoughts or experiences would be helpful!

Diag Proctitis 2004 (Pentasa)

Diag UC 2009 (IV Hydrocortisone and several stays in hospital, prednisilone, pentasa)

Currently been on Aza since July as all the above have not worked, and next step is surgery, unless the Aza works!

     Is that another term for 6MP?  If so, the side effects I suffered from it (been on it seven years), is loss of hair, but I am using Nioxin and it works wonders.

Hi Christine.

I couldnt tell you if its the same, but i just googled 6mp, and it to is an immunosupressive drug, so it must be,lol! Ive been taking it 2 mths, and have been fine, but I dont know if its the drug working, or if im just having a good run. Ive beeen told its the las thing i can try, so i hope it works, but just dont fancy loosing my hair, not all of it anyway,lol!

    Oh, don't worry, you won't lose all your hair.  I had noticed mostly thinning and just a bit of hair loss.  You can always get a wig... smilewinkgrin .

I had to stop taking it as it caused liver problems. It started with a rash and I felt horrible, bloods were off. Apparently this is very uncommon.

Its called Imuran in North America.

Massive migraines - had to get off of it. Also, hair loss.

I've been taking Azathioprine / Imuran for like 4 months now. I had to have my blood drawn every 2 weeks until I visited with my GI last week. I had to do the CMP and CBC blood tests to make sure that my red and white blood counts and my liver and kidney function were OK.

I have also complained of fatigue. I have read on here a lot that fatigue is one of the side effects of Azathioprine. My Primary Care doc says sure, it is and that maybe I'm on too high a dose, but my GI doc says that I am actually on a lower than usual dose (it's usually 2 mgs per kilo, he says, and I weigh about 120# right now, so I'm not sure exactly what that is in kilos) and the only reason that fatigue should be a side effect is if my blood counts were off. He says "you are just tired because of your life, work, and family"

I guess I shouldn't complain because I am not having UC symptoms right now and why mess with what's not broken?

i was on that stuff for 2 months and i had to take myself off it because it made me vomit and feel like death warmed up for about 4 hours after i took it, i could'nt take it anymore, it was like a stomach flu. now i'm on mp6 and prednisone and having some success finally. if it works for you good luck with it.
