Hello,

I live in Windsor which is a border city to Detroit Michigan. There was an advertisement for a non-evasive colonoscopy in Michigan that promises to be just as effective as a traditional colonoscopy. The cost is 600 dollars. I would pay it to avoid ever having a colonoscopy again as that's when my real problems with U.C started. Prior to the colonoscopy, my symptoms were mild but got worse right after I had it done. I do feel much better now, thank God. Anyways, has anyone had this done or know any info about it's effectiveness?? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ummm I just paid $800 for a regular colonoscopy, so count me in!

You must mean non-invasive. I did a quick google search and got a bunch of hits, so I would suggest starting there. Just glancing through all the listed hits, it sounds to me like it is considered less effective than a regular colonoscopy, but I would do further research if you are interested in it. Of more concern to me, the usual prep is still required. That's the part I hate.

Hello, after I posted it I laughed when I noticed I had termed it non-evasive...anyways, thanks for the responses and if it does require the normal prep, then I 'm not interested...lol.. that's the part that sucks..

It's also called a virtual colonoscopy and yes, the prep is the same as a regular colonoscopy. I had one several years ago when I first started having symptoms - it cost me $900!

Apparently it's good for some things but not really recommended for in the case of UC. I mentioned it to my new GI when I met him last week and he told me that its not really relevant for UC sufferer - if I remember correctly it's because it doesn't show all the hidden corners and crevices that a regular colonoscopy does. It's good for discovering polyps, but they are not able to remove them so if polyps are detected you need to have a regular one anyway!

Lots of times a colonoscopy doesn't always get into the hidden corners and crevaces either and they only go so far up too, maybe a pill cam would be more effective? Pill cams go through the entire Gi tract since you swallow them.

my dr here in austalia does this type... but he said they mostly use it for endoscopy type procedures as (like said above) it doesnt show a 360 degree view of the whole colon and its 'nooks and crannies' like a scope does.
the camera is in one end of the little pellet like thing. ive seen it. looks hard to swallow.

i luv australia, we pay NOTHING for colonoscopies or any procedures at all.
and they knock you out so you wake up and its done.
i love the medicare system. FREE! and they give you money back too on regular appointments.

i remember they wanted to charge me almost $3000 in san diego when i lived there for colonoscopy. thats why i was never diagnosed til i got to australia. couldnt afford it.

As I understand it, the virtual colonoscopies (pill cam, non-invasive) are useless for people with UC because the doctor is just looking but not taking biopsies. For people with UC, you're supposed to have biopsies taken during the colonoscopy, so just getting a look at the colon isn't going to be helpful.

Any yes, i agree, if you have to the do the prep it's no better! :)

I have crohns spottily thru my entire GI tract and love the pill cam for it found the problems that was missed by the short egd and colonscopy. However I did have to have the 18 foot egd in order to get biosies. That being said the pill camera is pretty cool for not making your sore the next day, except you still have to do the prep.

When are we going to get to the point where they can just pass a tricorder over you and give you a diagnosis, like they did on Star Trek...?
