Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say that after trying every mode of therapy for my colitis, nothing seems to work anymore and I'm opting for surgery.  I wish I had taken the illness more seriously and treated it more aggressively when it was in its earlier, less aggressive stages.   

For anyone who wishes to learn from my mistakes, I invite you to learn as much as possible so you can avoid the mistakes I made.  I'ver done it all from fecal infusions to LDN and document it here.

p.s. I just wanted to say it's not all doom and gloom but rather lessons learned.  In spite of all the physical pain, I've had some great times in spite of the illness!  And I look forward to my upcoming surgery.

Steven,

Try not to beat yourself up over this; for many of us even aggressive therapy failed. I wish you good health post surgery and if you are like the majority of us you will wonder why you didn't opt for surgery sooner!

Best of luck to you on the 29th!! I thought they wouldn't operate if your Colitis is indeterminate because it might be Chrons?

Thanks for the wishes!

The doctors I've seen (3 separate opinions) are in agreement that if I don't do this surgery, I am at too high a risk of toxic megacolon.  And due to the severe refractory inflammation, they say that whether it's Crohn's or Colitis is irrelevant now as the inflamed parts must come out.  Whether I have UC or Crohn's becomes relevant later though: if I have Crohn's they can't do a J-Pouch (pelvic pouch) later.

Hey man good luck!

During this flair I'm in now.. I'm telling myself, is the remicaid I'm about to start after this flair doesn't work, I'm going in for surgery if I flair again, I can't do it anymore, I'm 19 years old and I lose 40 to 45 pounds in a month each flair up, I was hospitalized this time...

Also my dad had UC also and he got the surgery about 8 years ago and the UC is gone, absolutely picture perfect surgery, no issues, and everyone I've encountered that got the surgery has said the only regret is they didn't do it sooner.

So hey man actually congratulations, I'm sure you're gonna be amazed how it feels to be NORMAL again. I don't get why some who have HORRIBLE flairs for a year sometimes don't opt for surgery..

Lots of luck! And PLEASE, post about your experiences. My son will have to consider surgery if what he is trying now fails, so I am very interested in hearing about it. I wish you the very best!
