Spinach and sunflower seed diet

     To those of you who have had success with this diet could you please tell me how often you eat spinach and since I also have diverticulosis in addition to ulcerative proctitis I cannot tolerate seeds in any form but is there an alternative?  I love spinach and have it at least twice a week, but apparently that has no effect.

Christine, you can try sunflower seed butter which is found in quite a few organic or natural food stores (including at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's). Spinach doesn't need to be the main part of your diet but also a side-dish with whatever else you're eating. So, you could start off with 1/2 can - 1 can a day of spinach, and 2-4 tablespoons of sunflower seed butter.

Christine, I have noticed recently ads on tv about Plumsmart juice. It touts as being high in magnesium and potassium. I have tried it and it is quite good. For me the sunflower seeds are the MAIN ingrediant. However, I am planning on using the Plumstart from here on. My bathroom habits have not made a 180 degree swing but for most days it is very close. Occassionally, I might visit the BR 4,5 or 6 times a day; at one time I was going in the neighborhood of 30 times a day.  In July I eliminated all of my UC meds. With the meds I had all of the classic symptons. Today no bleeding, no mucous, no urgency (well hardly ever) and no more $700.00 - $800.00 coming directly out my pocket. My Dr. was talking about Remicaid and possibly surgery. Who knows, it may yet come but for now I am extremely Blessed. I really am Thankful to the All Mighty. I am also Thankful to cfromutah.      Thanks for the info.  I would love to go to Trader Joe's.  My cousin used to go there all the time but she lived in North Jersey and I live in South Jersey (Go PHILLIES).  She now lives in AL and no Trader Joe's close to her either.  A lot of our health food stores around here closed up.  I have no idea why...guess a bum economy.

     Is Plumsmart Juice sold in the super markets?  We live close to Pathmark, ShopRite and Acme.

JLH, I don't know if your eating spinach or not but If your just eating sunflowerseeds and no spinach make sure you eat something to get plenty of beta carotene such carrots or carrot juice because beta carotene is a very important ingredient that's needed in the spinach sunflower seed diet that makes it work.

if I start to get symptoms I eat between 1/2 to 1 full can of spinach every day or every other day and sunflower seeds nearly every day. if im in remission I only eat spinach once a week or so but still eat sunflower seeds most days.
A good alternative to the sunflower seeds are sunflower seed butter and avocados.

Christine, I located Plumsmart at Kroger. However, they did not have a reduced sugar version which is available from Plumsmart. I may try and order it on line. Cfromutah, I do eat spinach and carrots quite regualarly - but I believe the main ingredient for my success is the sunflower seeds because I sometime get lazy and omit the others. Jim

     I stocked up on spinach and bought the sunflower butter today.  I love it! Who said it tasted yukky?  Tastes great to me!

Sunflowerseeds don't contain beta carotene but spinach, carrots and  other vegetables do. Sunflower seeds contain magnesium and other helpful nutrients.

     Seems like the sunflower butter gave me cramps and I just read over the diet my nutritionist gave me and guess what?  NO spinach...uh oh.

Can you drink spinach juice?  Someone mentioned elsewhere that the nutrients are not lost when spinach is juiced.  I can see how regular spinach would do a number of divirticulitis (sp?).

     On a liquid diet now to take pressure off bowel.  Waiting for insurance approval to start Remicade.

Christine, if you're on liquids then juicing spinach and carrots is a good way to get some needed nutrition and energy.
