I have had ulcerative colitis for approx. 18 years. I have been taking Asacol tablets to control it for the last 10 years but have also used cortisone enema's during flare-ups.
I have been really healthy for the past 18 months but made the mistake of cutting down on my Asacol dosage which I think has contributed to this flare-up. When I couldn't get my flare-up under control by upping my intake of Asacol, I immediately phoned my GI for a cortisone prescription. He has suggested that I rather participate in his clinical study which entails investigational medicine called CP-690-550, which is a JAK inhibitor.
Has anyone heard of this treatment and whether or not it is effective. It would also be great to hear from anybody who has participated in a similar clinical study. Also, does anyone know whether the side effects of this treatment are worse than that of cortisone enemas?
Also, my dilemma is that I am going overseas for two weeks in December. It is a holiday that entails a lot of flights and road travel and I am wondering whether I should run the risk of going on this clinical study and perhaps not managing to get this flare-up under control before I leave in December.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
