What if you need antibiotics?

I'm coming off an bad flare that required 4 days hospitalization in mid August.  That was probably caused by a big dose of Amoxicillin taken before a dental procedure.  So back on Prednisone.  I'm now tapered down to 10 mg/day (started at 40) and feel like my colon is really beginning to behave itself. 

For the last 3 weeks I have been battling a sinus iinfection and URI.  I opted not to take any antibiotics because I was afraid of going back to flaring.  There has been no improvement in the URI.  My Primary is so far leaving it up to me about the antibiotics.  What to do???  I'm taking Clariten D, Mucinex and saline rinses.  Are there some antibiotics that might work for the URI but not irritate my colon?  Anybody know anything about this?

     If you have an infection, I think it wise to go on an antibiotic.  My GI prescribes Flagyl along with Cipro.  Apparently, the Flagyl keeps the "good" bacteria from being destroyed.  At least that is how it was explained to me.

If you're going to take antibiotics, then you could increase your dose of probiotics to try to counter any ill effects. And keep at least a couple of hours between taking antibiotics and probiotics.

Don't know if this would be an option for you, but, every year since I was 9yrs old, now I'm 43, I ge strep throat.  won't tke Amoxiciln, after I wasDX withUC. So,my Dr gives me 1 singe shot and thats it. Maybe they can do that for you.

I just finished a course of Zithromax for bronchitis and pneumonia (yick!), and I actually think my flare improved while I was on it. Of course, I know we're all different when it comes to what makes our UC worse. Aggravating! I hope you find the right thing to make you feel better!

Sometimes there is no choice but to take antibiotics. There is also a trade-off among the different antibiotics. Usually the safer ones don't work as well.

Drink lots of cranberry juice. Take probiotics.

Right now, I'm suffering from an ear infection. OW!!!!

I think the last time I had an antibiotic was in 2001. GI gave me flagyl. It was mainly to try and get a flare under control though. Worked.

I think I'm always being prescribed antibiotics. I just received two prescriptions this week: one for a mole that became infected and the other for an ear infection. I'm using only the one for the ear. Thank goodness, it's a topical antibiotic. The other prescription isn't really necessary. The mole tore off and the area is starting to heal on its own.

If Zithromax is a Z pack, that's what I took that worked.  It's acts very quickly and you don't have to take it long.  I even told my dentist that if I ever need an antibiotic again, that's the one I'll have to have.

Hey, thanks for your input.  My primary is suggestiong Z Pack and I have taken Flagyl & Cipro before for CDiff.  It has been only the Amoxacillin that has caused the flares so far.

Potato-zithromax, azithromycin and the z-pack are all the same thing.

I can't have amoxacillin. Penicillin allergy. Fun.
