UC-friendly pain killers for migranes??

Hi! First of all I'm new here! googling UC related questions has landed me here a lot so I finally decided to get an account!

Anyway, I've had UC for about 2 years now (17 when Diagnosed and 19 now). I also have gotten migraines since I was about 13. I don't get them very often (probably like once every month and half at the most) but when I do they can get pretty bad. Anyway, before UC, a couple Asprin or Excedrin would usually do the trick. But I've found now that even just one pill and I'll be bleeding and cramping for the rest of the day. I know it's pretty well known that NSAIDS can exacerbate symptoms and even trigger flares in some UC patients and I'm definitely one of them. I can take ibuprofen with no problems. But only for mild things like a cold or something. When it comes to a bad migraine, it does absolutely nothing for me. So up until now, I've just been just been dealing with the migraines when they come. They only usually last a day at the most but I really can't do anything for that day. And I'm sure a day of taking an NSAID would be horrible for my UC. So, my question is, what other pain killers out there should be safe to use with UC? What do you guys usually take for pain? I can't seem to find any good info online on anything but Ibuprofen and I don't want to go trying different drugs without some more info on how it might affect my UC. Preferably over the counter. My GI doc doesn't want to add a pain killer to my already long enough list of prescriptions and I'd rather not take a prescription-strength pain killer anyway. So he just said avoid NSAIDS and didn't really have anything else to recommend other than tylenol.

Here are the Meds I'm on now in case it's relevant:
Lialda - 2 pills twice daily
6-MP - 25mg once daily
Remicade - infusions every 2 weeks (Just starting this and just had my second infusion)

Only thing that worked for me when i got migraines from taking Sulfasalazine was Moltrin with some food and water. It didnt bother my stomach at all. Hope you find a solution because migraines truly do suck. I wanted to drill a hole in my head when I got them to relieve the pressure ; /

i've had a headache for the past 3 months every single day, ranging from bad to migraine. my regular doc has me on Topamax, Butalbital (as needed, I try not to take it often), Muscle Relaxers (they think a lot of them are tension related), and I still can't get rid of them. She prescribed me physical therapy, bascially massage therapy but my first appt isn't until Monday. Oh, and she also gave me Relpax which is a migraine med but it didn't do anything.

I'm sooo sick of having a headache!! I have an appt w/ my GI doc next week and I'm curious if the 6MP could be causing them??

Fitmom, I believe my headaches are due to 6mp as well. I had slight headaches before probably due to Colazal but when I started 6mp, my headaches became more severe.

I cannot do NASAIDS at all - they make me bleed simply due to my UC. I also notice you are on Lialda. I was on that for about two years and was told multiple times by my doctor and nurse to NEVER NEVER take NASAIDS while on Lialda... That means no Aspirin or Ibuprofen. Not only are they bad for UC but combined with Lialda they are really hard on your kidneys. I would stick to Tylenol - if that does not work you can ask for Tylenol 3. I had a terrible shoulder pain once that lasted for days and I had to take Tylenol 3 to manage. I would think that since you have migraines Tylenol 3 would be something your doctor would prescribe easily. Hope this helps you and I hope you can get rid of your headaches!

The lialda gave me bad headaches.. Maybe its not the 6 mp?

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely give the Tylenol Arthritis a try. If that doesn't work I'll talk to my GI about a prescription I can just take as needed. I think that would be fine considering I don't get migraines too often. I know it's not the medicines causing them. I had migraines long before I being diagnosed and starting meds. And they haven't gotten any worse having been on them for about a year now. Thanks again!
