I was wondering if any experiences mouth sores with ulcerative colitis. I get sores in my mouth and cold sores on my lips and my mouth feels very acidic. It seems to be damaging the enamel on my teeth. If anyone does have this problem, have they found anything that helps to diminsh the problem? I do take Lysine for the colds sores, but it doesn't seem to help much.

I get them all the time. The thing that helped me was switching toothpastes. Pick one that does not have SLS sodium lauryl solfate or whatever SLS stands for. I uses Toms brand, but sensodyne works as well.
Hope that helps.

Cold sores (which are always outside the mouth) are a form of herpes and can be treated with some over the counter meds like abbreva. They are not UC related. I never get those kinds.
Canker sores, on the other hand, are either red or white with a red halo and found inside the mouth. Many people with UC or Crohn's get these (I get them on the tail end of pretty much any illness or UC flare) and I've yet to find anything that worked. Though, I may try sgtpeper's idea, problem is I'm short on money.

I heard about
going for the toothpastes without SLS from my dentist who said it has had good results for people with constant canker sores like myself. Since I stopped using a toothpaste with SLS in it I have had VERY few canker sores. Before then I would have at least 2 at any given time.
Hope that helps,

Hi, For enamel problem, I use "GC MI Paste Plus". It is professional use only. My dentist told me to use. You apply over your teeth before go to bed. You will notice the difference within a week. For mouth inflammation, I use liquid vitamin E and when I take vsl#3ds, I leave it in my mouth for a few second. To me, vitamin E is better than probiotic. I pay $20 for MI Paste and I use about
6 month.

I get canker sores. Not as often as when I was a kid though. My mom told me the first time I had canker sores I had 30 in my mouth at one time (thankfully I don't remember it). I've used Kanka on them. It numbs it so it doesn't hurt as bad.

I take Valtrex for cold sores. If you start taking it when you first feel that tingle on your lip then it goes away quicker or even stops it before it gets to a sore. I take two a day few a few days during those times.
I get canker sore every time I eat any substantial amount of acidic tasting raw fruits or juices. Other things (colds, UC flare) can bring them on too but I bet you can find a relation to something you're eating or taking (too much vitamin C maybe?) and canker sores forming.

i found a toothpaste with tea tree oil and neem in it with none of that SLS or flouride extras ... it was only about
$6 at a whole foods store and it has been quite helpful.

I get canker sores all the time when I am flaring. I must be in a flare since I've had one for the past month or so!

My mother drinks orange juice and the next day she has a canker sore. It will also cause a cold sore breakout for both of us. One of my daughter's was getting canker sores after we were give her a lot of fresh pinnapple in her lunch. Look to what you're eating as the cause. I got them all the time and tried switching toothpastes and using salt water or baking soda rinses, helped a little but still got them. Years ago I eliminated certain fruits and haven't had one since.

You should get this checked out by a doctor. If you are taking any drug that makes lowers your immune system, which most of us are, it is very common to get fungal infections in the mouth and throat. It is easily treated but can actually be serious is left untreated. A doctor can easily tell if it is candidiasis which is also known as thrush. Prednisone is the worst, in this sense, since it not only lowers your immune response but increased your blood sugar which fungas love.

My daughter was diagnosed with UC four months ago and had her first mouth ulcer recently. I almost had a heart attack I was so worried. It was after she had a very sour pickle. I put some manuka honey and a drop of wild oregano oil on it and it went away overnight.

I get sores in my mouth from time to time. Mine are mostly towards the back of my throat, so I don't know if it's the same thing. I got a prescript
ion for a special mouth wash when it was more of a problem for me. I think it was called Miracle Mouthwash. It did help.

I used to get cankers a lot when I was a kid (pre-teen into teenage years). My dr suggested I take a B vitamin supplement. Once I started taking those regularly, I didn't get cankers any more. I did find that if I stopped taking the supplements for a while, I would get really tired and I'd develop cankers again. I didn't get diagnosed with UC until I was 25, and yes, I got cankers once in a while with my flare ups. Taking a b-complex vitamin kept them in check for the most part until I got really sick. Before I had my colectomy, I had several cankers. It was terrible! They didn't clear up until about
2 weeks after surgery. I have heard that rinsing with salt water helps - but I could never stand the taste of salt water, so I never tried.
