Asacol 12 pills a day. or two months of prednisone -- now tapering at 17.5 mg. from 40...
Any thoughts on the hair loss?

A lot of people say Asacol causes hairloss. I know I lost a TON of hair when I was pregnant. I attributed it to that and anemia, but it was also when I was on a higher dose of Asacol. I've been on prednisone the whole time and my hair grew back

I was on Rowesa and over half my hair fell out. Its a good thing I have a lot of it or else I would be able to see my scalp.

i lost a lot of hair too when i was on prednisone and asacol, i always assumed it was the prednisone because i assume steroids are the cause of everything unpleasant, but maybe it was the asacol! there are vitamins you can take that make your hair stronger, especially b vitamins like folic acid (so they say). i never personally took it but i hear it works wonders. even if it doesn't prevent hair loss, it might make your hair grow back stronger... after i lost a lot of hair and i got better, i used this really amazing fortifying shampoo and conditioner every day and my hair actually grew back healthier than it ever was! i guess there is a bright side to hair loss after all...

I think the majority of hairloss is from anemia. I lost a third of mine last year. God, that was awful. That was after a few months of remission but I read online that alopecia due to anemia takes about
a few months for your follicles to die after achieving remission. Been taking asacol for a few months now and so far no abrupt hairloss. I'm hoping I won't have to go through that again.

Look at the big picture....severe weight loss, prednisone, possibly asacol, extreme diet change plus the other meds and reasons you're on them.
This has been happening over a period of time. Once you get more levelled off, things will start to even out and hopefully the hair loss aspect will stop and it will start the process of growing back.
Are you still getting your period?
It sucks this is happening to you, I hope you get the doc to also check your thyroid, Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 levels.
Are you eating enough protein in your diet?
What other supplements are you taking?
It will take a long while for your hair to get back...that will certainly be after you're off the pred. Look at it as at least 6 months to see any results.

journey, I think that your hairloss could very well be due to how sick you are and how very little you've been eating. I'd wait until you get into remission and see what happens!

Hi, I take asacol 6 pills/day. Also I eat kelp soup two times a day to control colits. Now my hair are too full and my hairdresser thin out my hair. Causes may be due to my colitis is in control and/or kelp.

Its likely that my hair thinnning is caused by Asacol as well. Taking Biotin twice a day seems to have worked on the hair on my head but my calves are half hairy and half bald lol.

Hair doesn't grow back spontaneously....it only grows a half to one inch a month at its best.
It takes almost 3 months for it to even get out of the scalp after being dormant for a length of time.
Again....one has to look back for months to almost a year to look at the total reasons as to why one has hairloss....but very high doses of steroids will definitely have one lose the hair quickly.
Healing a flare takes less time actually than noticing hair growth again after hairloss.

Hey journey, I just noticed that (on my monitor) your signature is 13 lines long. We like to have signatures no longer than 10 lines, as each line takes up bandwidth, which we have to pay for. Can you please shorten it a bit?
Thanks!

I have had random hair loss through out my various flares. I am not sure which drug is causing it and in fact, for me, it actually may be more about
health or hormones or something.
I usually ask whoever is cutting my hair if they have any suggestions to de-accentuate it.
Good luck.

I never lost hair when I was on Asacol the first time. I've lost half my hair since last year, but I don't know if it was due to Colazal or Remicade. I've switched to Asacol just in case the hair loss was caused by Colazal. Biotin hasn't helped at all.
And I'd much rather spend extra money on shampoo/conditioner than give up meds that are keeping me in remission.

I did not realize I lost so much hair until I went to Jamaica and sunburned my head. Ouch!
