Sometimes I think this is the only thing that holds my stool together. Can you please tell me, if you take this stuff, how much are you taking and when you are taking it, and in what liquids and amounts of those liquids.
I want some perspective on this....
Thank you...

I take Metamucil. I heap a teaspoon with as much as I can heap on it, mix it with about
6-8 oz water, chug a lug, put another 1/2 glass water in, swirl to get the psyllium mixed back in, chug that.
And then I do it again, for 2 heaping spoons.
Have done this for 23 years, and add a 3rd spoon if experiencing D. Otherwise, thanks for Metamucil, even in flares, poos have tended not to be liquidy and more comfortable.

I use about
a tsp at a time and just drop it in about
1/4 water. I do not stir it and let it thicken up. I just go ahead and drink it.

I just take Metamucil capsules with 1/2 glass of water -- it doesn't get as messy as having to mix powder with liquids, and it's convenient to carry around. I've tried all the powders and also the wafers, but these seem to work best for me.

ditto Rio.
I take mine with meals. I eat 2 major meals a day and take 5 capsules with each meal.

I've heard that you shouldn't take psyllium husk powder too close to your meds. Like one hour before or two hours after. So VSL don't mix it with it, eh?

I think if you eat it with food....it's like food, actually. I take my morning meds about
an hour after.
None of my meds state to take on an empty stomach. I also take my vitamins, etc with the whole lot. Maybe not getting the full benefits of some of them....but wth. I'd never take them otherwise.
My nighttime meds are taken on a pretty much empty stomach looooong after the fibre supplements.
I also never find un
opened asacol in my poos. They're actually an orange colour and quite
open. Something is right I guess.

Why did some stop taking the psyllium seed husk? Metamucil is much more convenient. What's in the seed versus the husks that they think is more beneficial to UC? I did a quick online search and really couldn't get a clear answer.

It's possible that some see the more soluble vs more insoluble. The metamucil has both soluble and insoluble, but the ratio is more insoluble.
Both have good merit, but the convenience of the capsules is great. The advantage of the powder, however, is that one gets more fibre.
Diet adds fibre, so using the capsules plus diet should give a nice variety of fibre...
Let me also add that the very act of eating is a huge plus!!!

On this subject, does anyone have any problems when taking psylilium husk? I am always worried about
adding new items into the mix. Has anyone had worse symptoms from using this?
Thanks,

sgtpepr: you will get more bulk so if your colon is severely inflammed then a bm with more bulk will cause much discomfort. I felt as though a baby was being delivered out my colon. I'm in a wicked bad flare and took a little of it with my meals. It made my bm's much more productive, decreasing frequency. I quit taking it a few days ago and now my bm's don't hurt but I can't sleep from having to go so often. I would start with a small amount at first. I'm going to start taking it again except use very little.

Right now I'm doing the SCD plus asacol plus prednisone plus canasa nightly and I am down to going once or twice a day and somedays not at a ll. MY BMs are fairly solid, is it still worth me taking?
Thanks,

the husk is ground extremely fine and it absorbs fluid from the digestive tract and isn't abrasive to the colon. It's also (to me) a good idea to take it with food.
