Not good, well good for a few weeks...i went to my GI day before thanksgiving and he was happy i was doing so well, said keep up what your doing..Ive pretty much been in remission before that no blood, solid stools 1 bm a day..so i tapered down to every other night. everything's ok. After thanksgiving weekend i stopped all together. Just staying on oral meds and VSL #3. everything was great until today. ive only had one bm but i could see some streaks of blood on the stool, darn itT. right when i thought i was there surprise!. so back to the old drawing board. its like a chess game...the butt rules again

Yeah, we eventually learn.....that's why we stress the importance of tapering and maintenance. Personally, I don't think you're on enough rectal med dosage..the Canasa is good for maintenance, tho.

You could.......should....ask the doc for Rowasa.

Is blood always present with ulcerative colitis? I haven't been diagnosed yet. Seeing GI Tuesday but I have not seen blood in my stool. I only have one bowel movement a day but I constantly have a an urge to have one throuout the day. Only have had diahrrea three times in six weeks. No constipation. Just pain, urges, nausea, and mucus in stool.

I disagree with Canasa not being enough personally.

I was on Rowasa and it wasnt doing the trick. My colonoscopy showed all my irritation to at the very end of my colon. SO my doctor switched me back to Canasa because it would give me a more concentrated dose right where I need it vs Rowasa which was virtually going past the area that needed the most help.

A few weeks on Canasa and I feel much much better.

Very low in the rectum and "irritation"? could respond to Canasa. Inflammation for some, however, can be very intense and difficult to treat where Canasa isn't enough.

Now, in saying that....Canasa used up to 3 times a day will give 3000mg dosage of mesalamine, a good dosage for rectal flaring, especially if there's bleeding.

I think the Canasa is good for tapering, for supportive treatment and maintenance...yeah, based on experience.

It's good that the OP is using oral 5ASA....it'll help in the sigmoid and above.

Some do react better to some meds than others...very true.

Based on my experience, the higher med concentrated especially with bleeding is better. The med can be administered to remain more in the rectum than higher. But, some do react negatively to a higher dosage of 5ASA...there is also a 2g dosage.

It's still awesome that we have options available....I think it would be super awesome if we in North America had the 5ASA foam enemas...that would be sweet.

Ya i hear ya on the Rowsa but it think mine is very low in the rectum at least its what my GI said. Ive done Canasa the last two nights, no blood.

Thats how canasa worked for me. Almost instantly better vs rowasa. And I am only use 1 a day.
