UC & Kidney stones

I haven't heard of it but we're prone to everything else so why not... My dad doesn't have this and gets them all the time, once he had one like the size of a pea. Ouch.

I've never read/heard about UCers being more susceptible to kidney stones compared to anyone else. My MIL has diverticulosis and she has kidney stones right now...I'm unsure if those with diverticulosis patients are necessarily more susceptible either...far as I've ever known anyone can have issues with them.

Yes, I have actually read that people with IBD are at a higher risk of kidney stones. The article I read suggested that people who have had bowel surgery are at a higher risk. It didn't say how much of a higher risk, but that it was linked to IBD.

I have had kidney stones (before I had UC though). They are not fun! But my urologist said that drinking lots of water would help keep things flushed out plus he mentioned fresh lemonade...the acid in the lemons actually combats the formation of stones. It cannot be powered lemonade...it has to be fresh or the frozen concentrate...so it contains the proper acid from the lemon.

But there we go with things as UCers that are not tolerated by some...round and round and round we go...

I have kidney stones as a secondary condition to UC.  As it has been explained to me:  Your colon is inflammed and unable to process and excrete Calcium like it should.  So you have extra calcium floating around your body, it is deposited back into your kidneys where it formes stones.  My doc put me on Kcit (which is a mixture of potassium and citrtic acid) and I drink lemonade religiously.  I have 2 stones now, but since I have been on this regimen, they have not grown at all per my 9month x-ray.  I have x=rays done every year to make sure they are still small.  If they ever get to be larger than 5mm, they will lithotripsied.  My plan is a little aggressive since I have had to have 2 surgical removals of 9mm stones.  Worst pain of my life.

It was not too bad as I remember it.  They take you down for an x-ray to make sure they are still there and where in the kidney they are.  then they IV you up and take you down.  Put you out and you remember nothing.   I do remember being in a large amount of pain when I woke up, but they managed that with drugs, and I had a slight abrasion on my back for a couple of days.  Kinda like rug burn.  I threw up from the anestesia on the way home.  but the worst part was the first pee I had to take was like peeing sand.  I had to collect all the peices for analysis, and I had to hang over my bed and beat my back for 10 minutes a couple times a day for a while.  But it is a heck of a lot better than getting them stuck in your ureter.  I will take litho any day over that pain.  You will be fine....it really wasn't that big of a deal....no worse than a colonoscopy!!  Good luck

I've had my bouts w/ kidney stones....I have had to have 1 of them blasted w/ lithotripsy which was painless until they removed the catheter - honestly I would rather pass a barbed softball than get another catheter......the others passed on their own....my most recent two were passed into a paint filter at work - I have gotten pretty used to them....they really suck....Urologist said I am a "chronic stone guy"....I try to stay hydrated and drink cranberry juice a lot.
