Staying on meds long term like prednisone and the chemotherapy drugs like Azothiorprine and 6-MP are not good for your body as essentially the supress the natual state of your immune system which causes other side effects. I found home remedies etc are basically useless and a waste of money. They dont know what causes UC and cant cure it without surgery, so its a matter of deciding to wait around for them to discover a cure or get it fixed asap and move on with life.
I agree that drugs like prednisone, Azothiorprine, and 6-MP are harmful to the body. I would rather get surgery than result to such drugs. It would be a hard call to make though, because one day there is no inflammation, the next day there is, and there is no way of knowing whether or not the following day the body will stop attacking itself or not. It's the nature of this disease.
As for home remedies, fecal transplantation cost me less than $5 and put me immediately into remission. Yes, the medical community does not know what causes UC. Their success rate is not very high. Something in the range of 25-40% of all people diagnosed with UC eventually get their colons taken out. Until the medical community finds a better solution to taking drugs like prednisone, Azothiorprine, and 6-MP, we must take control of our own health. It could be that some of us are very predisposed to this disease and will end up having to get our colons taken out no matter what we do. However, some of us are not so predisposed, if at all. There are alternative treatments that can help us. It's just a matter of finding out which ones. For example, fecal transplantation, probiotics, and an anti-inflammatory diet have put me into remission. They may not help everyone, but consuming anti-inflammatory foods and beverages makes sense for calming inflammation naturally and doing fecal transplantation and taking probiotics makes sense for balancing an imbalance of fecal flora.
