I believe I am heading back into remission

To make this brief, I have been in a progressive flare since before xmas with blood and mucous but luckily no D.  I had colonoscopy and GI said left sided flare wanted me to take Asacol and enemas.  They do not work for me and I had previously told her that.  She threatened to kick me out of the practice and said I would end up in the hospital it I didn't listen.  So instead I tried hormones-did not work-although I only gave it a couple days-but I was getting worse.  I saw my family doc and he agreed to put me back on 6mp until I see my new GI on the 25th.  I also started back on an antidepressant Sinequan to help me sleep and it has the nice effect of slowing my gut down.  Well here I am six days later and no blood and finally today a "normal" looking time in the bathroom.  I do still have some pain in my left side when anything passes by but it is getting better and better.  So could the 6mp work that fast-anyone have that happen?  Or could it be the antidepressant?  A side note on Wikipedia does says the antidepressant is good for gastrointestinal ulcers.  I don't know but I am happy to be feeling better.

I would not give up on folks so quickly... A lot of people work all day and it is during the week. I have never heard of hormones for a flare? Do you mean steroids/prednisone. I have also never been on 6mp or antidepressants so I can not add much there either. I have been in a flare since early August, actually started earlier. I am on Lialda (was on asacol). Prednisone, tapered then had to go back up. I actually started on the mesalamine enemas last week and have seen improvement, particularly going less and finally little if any blood/mucus. Well hang in there and I am glad you are improving. Wanted to assure you that someone cares. I am also pretty new to this forum. I think you have posted more then me. Sometimes I get responses and sometimes not. I try not to stress about it. There are plenty of other things that are much more disappointing.

Sorry I didn't reply to your post. I try to answer as many as I can but I've sick :( But I am glad you found something to help you! Personally for me, hormones made me sooooo much worse. I am very sensitive to hormone changes and the added hormones made me feel like it was the end of days! :) I am not on an anti-depressant so I can't respond about that one.

Ps. I find it horrible that your doc would threaten to throw you out of the practice for refusing a medication especially when there is so much more to try! Shame on that doc!

I don't have experience with either 6mp or antidepressants, so i really can not add anything to that-but I am glad you are doing better!

And I agree with Sherry-shame on your doc for that threat!! Sounds a lot like my first doc-I am SO glad to be out of that practice!

Also, please try not to take it personally when people don't post right away. I have had some threads that have gotten only a couple of responses and some that have more-people do work, or sometimes don't feel like they have much to add-I know sometimes I wait to respond because i think there might be someone else who could add something more meaningful than I could.

Again, I am glad you are feeling better!!

that is crazy that a doctor would threaten you like that, shame on that person!
Great news you found some relief. I have a question though, my GI wanted/wants me to go on 6MP. I have been told by him and others that that drug can take a very long time to kick in (6 months is what several have said) So I am wondering if you feel the relief you are having is from the 6mp and it is kicking in really quickly for you?
Also, if you have tried 6mp before, how long did it take for you to see relief? Does anyone else have answers from personal experience on 6mp and how long it takes to kick in?

Thanks for the replies.  smile   Still feeling better. Saw my new GI doc today.  He's good with the 6mp. 

Big Frankie, I know 6mp is supposed to take a couple months to kick in so I'm not sure which med is helping right now but I had a slight flare when I was pregnant a few years ago and 6mp kicked in relatively quick as it did this time.  I think I took it about a total of three months and quit (I know I'm bad).  I was in remission after that for 4 years.  I have had no side effects whatsoever.  As for 6 months for it to work, that sounds a little long.  I've heard 2-3 months or sooner.  I guess everyone is different but it may be worth a try for you.
