My doctor wants to switch me to this new med and take me off the asacol. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with the med. I am having tons of arthritis since coming off of prednisone and they think this will help. Any input would be helpful. thanks

I have never been on it but my understanding is that it is actually an older/original med used to treat UC. It is less expensive then all the fancy new ones. Some people are allergic to it, but it does also treat the arthritis. I am actually toward the end of my prednisone taper and concerned that my joints will begin aching badly again. Let me know how you do on it. I think it begins to dissolve higher up in the digestive system then asacol and lialda, that have that fancy coating. Because of this it is less likely to treat the other end of the colon. Again, this is my understanding. I hope you have great results with it!

I was on sulfasalazine for, what about 10 years, before asacol came out?
My doc switched me off it because ... I don't know, because it was so exciting that there was actually a new drug for UC? lol And some people have sensitivities to the sulfa component.
I have heard of it for some form of arthritis...

I noticed no difference between sulfasal. and asacol, in terms of UC or side effects.

The sulfasalazine was a LOT cheaper.

Wouldn't it be great if the one med helped both your UC and your arthritis?

He might also consider to up your rectal meds to retention enemas.

I am taking it. I have only been on it a month, and my doctor said it takes at least 3 months to see if it is going to help. So far, I have seen no difference in the joint pain. Now, for uc, i am noticing that my stools are more formed and solid than when i was on asacol. I guess time will tell if it helps my arthritis. Thanks so much...i am actually finishing up my rx of asacol. It is so expensive i don't want to just throw it away. I will keep you informed on how it works and if the arthritis goes away...i really hope it does.

This was the first drug I ever took when I was diagnosed back in '97. It worked great for me and I wonder why my gastroenterologist never offered it to m again? No side effects except it made me thirsty for water.

Same here. I actually told my doc I wanted put back on it last month. Has worked better than colazal, lialda and asacol.l

been on it for i dont know prolly over a year or so, i dont think i have had any reactions to it but i do drink 9 or 10 bottles of water a day so that may help. i know that, as a male i was a little embarrased by this, that you will sweat a orange color, i change clothes at work with a large group of men and after 10 hours of sweating in 100degree heat my underwear is always kinda orange especially around the genital area. anymore it dont bother me but if you wear light color clothes and sweat you will get the orange tint. hope it dont bother you :)

Heathd, when you sweet and it gets on your clothes, does it stain or does it come out

Yes I use it like half the recommended dosage and I think maybe it helps, Asacol and Colazal actually made me worse. Yes it is waaaay cheaper drug than the other ones.

PS, I know I know, I'm just a lazy SOB... cool

I kinda figured it was a 5-ASA thingy. Probably one of the most prescribed drugs for UC.

I did try (a form of) it in the earlier days but seemed to get a 'sickly headachy' reaction. It was just after a baad flare and I probably didn't give it enough of a chance (orally or rectally). I maybe should've been more patient because the Azathioprine, which has been my 'maintenance' med for the past 3 years seems to be losing effectiveness. I may book an appt with my GI and ask to switch to 5-ASA.

I'm getting desperate now trying to stop this darn blood plus the 4-5 bm's per day!
