anyone taking pain medications for uc? and if so what? i currently take ultram daily at night. plus bentyl during the day. could the ultram be making me worse? is there other pain meds i should try instead tylenol does not do it for me. i usually have to take 2 ultram and then 2 tylenol an hour later because i'm still cramping.

Hi...I've only taken Bentylol and Tylenol. I've never tried Ultram or evern needed narcotic type meds for UC.
Where exactly are the cramping pains you're experiencing? Is it during bms? after bms?
After eating in the stomach?
You could also try other rectal meds at night and the Anusol during the day.
Are you having other issues with "female parts"....how are your periods? Are you ovulating? Are you having your period?
How is your diet? Do you think your cramping is because of gas? Is it constant? only at night?
What are your UC symptoms at this time? are you flaring?
Are you somewhat constipated? Yes, that could be a side effect of a narcotic type med.
If you're having that much pain, you should maybe get the doc to look a bit more intensely at what else could be causing it.
Hope you feel better soon.

i do feel worse when my period is coming. i am not constipated but i dont have crazy bowel movements. i usually go three times a day. most of the time i have the extreme urge to go and its just clots of mucus and blood. i had the mirena inserted not sure if that would affect anything with uc or not. i get constant cramping sometimes feel like i'm gonna pass out. but i constantly have cramping which is why i take ultram cause the doc said it is not a narcotic but narcotic like and will not affect my body like narcotics will. i am constantly tired but that could be because i have been prescribed klonopin as well 1/2 tab in the am whole tab at night for my anxiety. they did that hoping if we can control my anxiety and stress then the uc will start to get better.

I feel for you. UC is frustrating. In my case I have all sorts of extra-intestinal issues that lead to even more pain.
I have found extra strength tylenol (400mg) quite effective for about
4-5 hours. Aspirin and Ibuprofen are no-nos as they have a tendency to make my gut very unhappy.

Now do you have to take that daily? Is your cramping that bad? How often do you take it?

I definitely ran the gamut of painkillers while I had UC. Once my UC became severe, I had very regular sharp and intense shooting pains in the bottom area of my descending colon. Often I would wind up in horrible pain, locked in the fetal position and in the ER. I had regular prescript
ions starting at Darvocet. Then to Percocet, OxyContin, Morphine, Dilaudud and eventually Fentanyl which worked well for me. Unfortunately the painkillers really decrease your motility and depending on the drug and your body, can cause some bad constipation. If you absolutely have to use painkillers, be careful and only use them if absolutely necessary.
One thing that may help: There is a new painkiller out called Nucynta. I had my entire large intestine removed in April of 2009 and shortly after the surgery, I came completely off of painkillers. That was a huge relief. Unfortunately I occasionally have some bad pain/cramps now (maybe once or twice a month) and have to keep something on hand just in case. The wonderful thing with Nucynta is that it has a far less instance of constipation and affect on the bowel like normal painkillers do. My pain specialist actually told me about
it and the no/less constipation thing is a big selling point. It's an IR painkiller so it also works well for short instances of infrequent pain.
Hopefully you and your doctor will be able to manage things well enough that you can avoid painkillers! Best of luck to you. =)

i do take it daily yes. the cramping is that bad.
last 4 days though i have not needed it and have not seen any blood. which is unheard of for me so im pretty stoked.
it usually takes me 45 minutes to recover from a bowel motion.
and i vomit the pain is so bad as well.
since im preggers, ive been splitting my painkillers and only take a quarter at a time. they are 5mg pills.
but when im flaring bad, i take probably 4 whole ones a day total at the most.

In my experience i have found that the stronger pain meds only "store up" more trouble. I have found that they all cause bad constipation and that the bleeding is worse when you start "moving".
It's always better to find out exactly why your pain is so bad.
Maybe enemas would help if the trouble you are experiencing is nearer the lower end of your colon.
FEEL GOOD SOON

Oxycodone (10mg) helps me. I am back to work because of it. I am tapering prednisone and going into remission so I use it when I notice the pain. I usually take it every 4 hours during the day and it has taken away all urgency, cramping and pain. Where normally I would have 15 bm's at this stage of coming out of a flare I now have 3 (all between 3-5 am when the pain meds wear off). I started pain meds 6 weeks ago while in the hospital and they've allowed me to gain all the weight back I lost. I will never flare without them again. I wish I'd had asked for them years ago.

Valium is great especially if you ate having muscle spasms/cramps and it does not constipate or cause bleeding

The constipation aspect of the pain med is one of the benefits for me. Valium tends to make me sleepy but I do like it's calming effect.
