I've noticed a number of people here have signatures indicating they are on anti-anxiety meds like Xanax. For me I notice that stress/anxiety and flares are linked. There is a bit of a cycle in that the anxiety about
getting sick again causes some ongoing stress. I was wondering what other methods people have pursued for dealing with the stress and anxiety other than the drugs? What kinds of therapists do you seek out? What has worked for you in dealing with stress and anxiety?

I saw a psychologist....lots of therapy and cognitive behaviour
al therapy and some biofeedback.
yes, having ongoing chronis illness doesn't help and will exacerbate the stress/distress.
when it rains it pours...usually. Changing one's perspective or at least having options to see options is better than taking the victim role continually.
I do take an antidepressant but thinking I might be able to lower the dosage or go off of it.
I do use depression to deal with anxiety. Double edged sword....I'm more fearful of the depression than the anxiety, but I'm feeling emotionally stronger to at least put it all to the test.
Who's giving you your antianxiety meds? Ask to be referred to a therapist or counsellor or someone who does cognitive behaviour
al therapy.

I don't see anyone but I am taking drugs I take Lexapro 20mg daily and Klonopin 1/2 pill in the am and whole pill at night. I do feel like the Klonopin has helped me be more relaxed and not as stressed. The reason the doc put me on that was to help heal the uc because it is so bad right now. Hopefully that will work along with my other meds for uc and i will be able to get off the pain meds I am taking for uc. Do you currently take any meds for anxiety?

hello,
for my anxiety I use alot of relaxation tech. such as hot baths, walks, music, art, ect. creativity seems to help me to release what ever is going on for me. Excersise helps a great deal as well. I find that the meds do seem to feed into the anxiety somehow and make it worse. Not to mention they are addictive and that in it self is a bad cycle. I had such a hard time coming off the medication. This is what works for me and I hope that might be helpful in answering your question.

I think for most people there is a links between their stress/anxiety and flares. However, for me the link between antibiotics and flares is very strong, whereas I haven't noticed any link between my stress/anxiety and flares.

nichole....I don't take any meds for anxiety at this time, but I was taking ativan for a while as well as clonazepam. The ativan made me more depressed and the clonazepam made me too zonked the next day.
Once I started the Effexor XR, the anxiety did seem to lessen as well, but I'm on a low dosage just enough to take the edge off.
The Lexapro would work better for those with more anxiety than Effexor would. It wouldn't work for me. I took Celexa for a week and I slept and felt worse.
You should definitely see a therapist or counsellor to help get your mental thoughts figured out. It's almost impossible to do it all on our own because it's so automatic the thoughts are never recognised since the reaction is what we see first.

What relieves my stress/anxiety about
UC is a knowledgeable gastro who also has a sense of humor. Then I try to keep movin' with as much activity as my body will tolerate, and also include a lot of music & art in my life because cultural enjoyment generally boosts my spirit. No need for chemical enhancement if one can groove to J.S. Bach ... my help of helps! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Stress and antibiotics seems to cause my flares. I try to avoid antibiotics and my Mother in Law, I mean stress, as much as possible.

Walking keeps stress at bay for me.. well most of the time. I like to go walks very early in the morning, usually around 6am or 7am. It's so peaceful at this time, it's very easy to forget your troubles and concentrate on the nicer things in life.

The counselor/therapist route seems a good one. But I guess the question remains, what kind of counselor? Aren't there sub specialties in psychology? How would you find an appropriate one?

I joined a positive thinking therapy group once. Some college students were doing their dissertation on positive thinking and put together a group to study for their dissertation. It was great. I wish I could find something like that again.

Consistency, moderation, experience and exercise help me.
Consistency: I need good sleep, good food (protein and carbs frequently)
Moderation: Anything in excess is bad news. I can handle alcohol, caffeine, sugar, spices and most anything in moderation
Experience: I have two types of anxiety. One is based on epilepsy and having seizures (I take valium for that). The other is anxiety from phobias I've learned to master (I used to take xanax for these). For instance driving in traffic was anxiety producing and I would have panic attacks if place in situations I felt I couldn’t get out of. I know relax and give into the feeling instead of fighting it. I've found that if I take an "I don't care" attitude when the anxiety situation presents itself (say stuck on a chair lift while skiing), then I don't have panic. I realized that I never had these anxiety attacks while buzzed with alcohol or when terribly sick. This is because I’m so relaxed when drinking or have an “I don’t care attitude when sick. So I try to act as though I’m that way when in a situation that may cause anxiety. I just say I don't care and relax into the feeling. It's hard to explain but it works for me.
I need exercise almost everyday as well.

I am currently taking an anti-anxiety/anti-spasmatic. I chose Librax b/c it was recommended by a friend w/chron's
It's working great for both! I assume I will begin to stop it soon as I am currently sustaining my remission. I just want to be sure it's
gonna stick b/f I stop!
This last Flare was the worst I've had yet & I know it was fueled by stress, possibly even brought on by it. With 3 kids at home age 4 & under...
I basically told doc that I was going to need something to ease the anxiety & finally get this under control. The prednisone/canasa was not doing it.
I have also altered my diet to exclude the things I know have an ill effect on my intestinal tract & think that has been so helpful (& makes me so much
less bloated & comfortable!)
Last but never least, I have to ask...do you have good support around you? Without my husband, going through this would be HELL. It took us
awhile to get here (him really grasping the whole U/C thing!) but he's become so understanding & really helps out when I need him too :o)
The people here are a great source of emotional support as well. If you need to see someone, just do it...can't hurt!
