Rowasa generic is a mesalamine enema, and I think you'd probably do better on that than a suppository anyway. :) It's used at night, because it's hard to hold an enema in if you're up and moving around.

It's not at all like a fleet enema, which is designed to make you poop! Mesalamine enemas are retention enemas, which means they are meant to be held in. Some people have some cramping and feelings of having to poop when they use them, but I've never had that problem. Even when I was flaring badly, I only had one that I "lost" in less than four hours after using it. Once I started to heal, I was always able to hold them all night, and into the next day with no problem. Now that I'm in a good, solid remission, I rarely notice any change in my BMs from using them.

The first time you use one, maybe just use half to see if it's going to be hard for you to hold. Also, warm the liquid up a bit by holding it in your hands for a while, and be sure to squeeze the extra air out of the bottle before you use it.

You should, until you've been in remission (a good, solid remission) for a couple of weeks or so. I used them every night until then, then did them every other night for a couple of weeks, then went to twice weekly, which is where I'll stay for maintenance. Studies show that UC patients who use mesalamine enemas twice weekly in additon to oral meds stay in remission longer than those who just use oral meds.
