Remicade and 6MP

Just a curious question...those of you that started Remicade, were you also taking 6MP prior to starting and if so, did your doctor have you stop the 6MP prior to beginning Remicade? I ask for I've read of the increased cancer risk regarding taking 6MP and Remicade at the same time.

My daughter is still on both. There is debate on this topic. The rare cases of Lymphoma were in young males, and our doc had evidence to suggest that Remi worked longer when a low dose of 6mp was present. Esp. not knowing if the Remi was going to work, we didn't want to get off of 6mp too quickly-knowing that it takes months to get up to a therapeutic level in the system again. I do not know what is right for you though. Heck, I don't even know what is right for my daughter, but I had to trust the Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago.

Yes they made me stop the 6mp before starting it

     My doctor had me stop the 6MP too before starting Remicade.

Is Imuran a 6MP? My daughter is also on both, with the remicade being 10mg/kg every six weeks. She has been in remission since 12/09, when we increased the Remi dose and intervals. I'm thinking of asking her dr. if she should go down on the Imuran (or off!) since her Remicade dose is what it is now.

Has anyone been on Remicade and then stopped, and stayed in remission?

We are also experimenting with alternative treatments, and feel that it all must be working, b/c she is in remission, gaining weight, happier... The biggest change I think we made was going gluten-free. We had a test done, and I was hesitant since we had done gluten & casein free for her autism back in early 2000. But I really think her gluten sensitivity was adding the the inflamation & malabsorption pictures...

Trial and error, enjoying the remission honeymoon and hoping her colon heals for once and for all!!!
