What section of the colon does asacol target?

does it target the whole colon? or is it more specific like colazol targeting the left side colon? thanks

Yup, whole thing. It is supposed to start dissolving at the terminal ileum, but it has a pH dependent coating, so the exact starting point will vary somewhat depending on the pH of your system.

Yes, Asacol is for the whole colon. I didn't find it as effective for my proctitis, so my doc switch me to Apriso which does a better job at distributing to the lower left side

thanks for the info....im wondering why the doc put me on asacol, instead of colazol when i have left sided colitis?

You should be on both oral and rectal 5ASA meds...
Apriso won't treat the rectum (proctitis)...again...rectal meds in conjunction with the oral 5ASA meds.

Quincy, I have pancolitis and am taking 3600 mg of Asacol daily, but that is it. What rectal meds do you feel I should be taking? You seem to know a lot about this...

I should mention that I have moderate inflammation even while taking the Asacol.

I am also on the same asocol and don't feel quite fixed untill I started the rectal meds. I am on 1000 mg canasa supository and it has made a world of difference. I finally got my Dr to prescribe it by getting him to understand that it felt like the asacol wasn't getting all the way down.

I would suggest you take the retention enemas lookingforhealing. If you're in the US, that would be Rowasa. If you're in Canada, it would be Salofalk or Pentasa. If you're elsewhere, it would be Salofalk, Pentasa, Asacol and maybe a few others...

I know a lot about them because I've used rectal meds in conjunction with oral since my diagnosis 21 years ago.

I don't get why docs don't prescribe them....regardless of where the UC is extended to.


Oh, I'm talking 5ASA medications, but the oral and rectal topicals also are in steroid form.

Thank you, FairyGen and Quincy! I am going to try to see my doctor as soon as I can next week and try to persuade hi to prescribe me Salofalk or Pentasa (I am in Canada). If he tells me to talk to my specialist, I may have to punch him! (I am only able to see my specialist once every three or four months, he's very difficult to secure an appointment with.)

lookingforhealing, just thought I'd mention that it can take months to get in with my Gastro as well. I call and talk to his secretary and she can be very helpful herself. She usually will ask him my question and get back to me. It's actually helped me in different occasions lately, including getting my scribe for Salofalk.
