Pain on left side under rib cage.

This pain has been coming and going..when I press there it hurts even more..but whats even more strange to me is that it goes away after about 20 burps in a row.

What could this be other than gas? or colon pains on the left side? (or is under the ribs too high)?

Most of my discomfort is on my left side and under my ribs....it comes and goes for me too, and sometimes even the slightest movement will trigger it....

Yes, I have had pain under the ribs on the left side.

Hi! This is somewhat of A party trick for me, yet I don't usually have the energy to go out. When I breath in when I'm turned and stretched up a certain way that spot make a sound that is like a bull frog. In and out with the breath and it feels like a pocket of air. I try to do slight movements and breathe so I can almost feel it expand that area that I think is getting all cramped up from being doubled over and I admit very poor posture. This problem I have with my posture really smushes all my digestive parts together leaving them far from the proper room to stretch out and do their job. Talking about this has got me motivated to sit up. Hope all is well.

Sounds like gas to me. I get gas pain so bad sometimes it hurts to breathe. I get gas pain anywhere from way up in my chest to way down low. Try taking some phyazme and laying on your left side.

sounds like gas and spasming.

If you lay down and do a bit of a tummy/colon massage, it will help.

Some preparation teas can help as well.

I used to get that a lot and it stressed me out cause I though it was from my transplant, but my dr said it was just gas. streching and stuff or a heating pad helps a lot just keeps things moving so it doesnt push on ur ribs.

I was doing some research on surgery options to remove my colon since I can't take the meds to keep it in remission because I'm allergic to melsalamine. I found a sight that recommended laser surgery to remove the colon since it can get in behind the rib cage on the left side where normal surgery the doctor has such a hard time getting to that section. I have had pain in the area you decribed also so I would say it's just our U.C. bubby messing with us again.

I was affected by some temporary arthritis in my rib cage, apparently related to UC, but my symptoms were that I had stiffness and pain with each breath. An arthritis med, voltarin, cleared it right up.

But it sounds like the gas thing is probably what you are dealing with.

I get that when UC inflames my descending colon. Oral medication eventually takes care of it. The most likely cause of your discomfort is gas or inflamation I would think, but then arthritic conditions can trouble UCers, too. Medically, this area is called the "upper left quadrant". You could mention this as a problem at your next check-up; in my experience the doctors listen to the complaint politely, but never venture quick judgment as to what may cause it. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Recently suffered from pain below left rib age as I felt a serious flare coming on. The pain went away after a couple of days and alot of burps... I had no idea what the pain was until I read all the above posts!! I guess its gas and inflamation. I have lso been experiencing left sided chest pain but all of my blood tests are normal... a bit anemic...
What are your experiences with 6MP? Just started taking 50mg. Hoping it will eventually get me into remission.


30 years old- Diagnosed with proctitis on Jan09- condition worsened and diagnosed with left sided UC Oct of 09
cant tolerate Lialda, Apriso, Colozal or any mesalamine based enemas! made symptoms much worst!
started 6Mp Dec 09, stopped as stomach could not handle the medication.... remission for 3 weeks and started 6mp again a month ago. Hoping the 6MP will work as I feel I have been having a flare for the past year... the bleeding has not stopped as i have been exprimenting with mesalamine meds til now

I am most sore on my lower left side, too. My doctor said this is the most common area for people with UC to experience soreness and pain. :(

my 14 year old girl has had a pain under her left rib for about a year now when it first started to hurt she had hit her left side and we took her to the dr.and the dr done x rays and he told us it was from constipation .From the time she was born she has had problem with staying constipation. but it was her low part of her belly. the dr has never done no more test but x rays only. the dr told me to give her laxative when needed.well about two month now we have started her on one a day for teen it has got her on a reg bowel movement.now for about two week she has hurt every day on her left side we have keep up with her bowel movement and she go every day but the pain has started about three day really bad it make her cry.I have made app. for her she go tomorrow should i make them do more testing on her are just let them do the something a x ray like all ways and take them telling me she is constipation. she fights me about going to the dr she tell me they aint going to do anything but the same thing she is hurting all the time and it make me upset because i have the constipation problem to i know how bad it hurt to and i know how she feel to go to the dr and they dont do any thing but tell you to take laxation and if no better in a week come back but it a pain just like i have read other say it may hurt to day and go a ways for a week are two and started back up. but this time it aint going away please help me to make her feel better i hate to see her having to deal with something like this....

I've had the same pain as well, a kind of dull ache under my rib cage. I used to put it down to UC in my colon or extra gas.

Only problem is; I've had it a few times since having my colon removed, so I have no idea what it could be?!
