There will always be newer and better UC drugs coming down the pipeline if for no other reason than the old drugs, not matter how effective they may be, will eventually go off patent cutting into pharma profits.
At one time treating UC with probiotics was considered ‘alternative medicine’. It took a while but the evidence for their effectiveness was so overwhelming that even the most conventional GI will now recommend them as part of an overall drug therapy. There have been some studies, usually performed in Europe, hinting that the effectiveness of boswellia, psylllium seed, or turmeric compares favorably with some current UC drugs without the toxic side effects. Over the past 2 months that I have been on this forum I have seen several members provide links to those studies. So there is hope. Perhaps in 5 or 10 years herbal supplements will be recommended as probiotics are now. Many doctors already routinely measure blood levels of vitamin D for their IBD patients.
