Hi all

I've had UC for about 10 years. The first few years I was pretty bad off but since then I've had a few instances of flareups, maybe once or twice a year. I'm currently in the 7th month of a flare-up that's being extremely stubborn and just won't quit.

I live in NYC and have had a series of western medicine doctors. None of them have ever been able to recommend changes in diet, non-western remedies, etc. I've done a lot of my own research but I'd love a doctor who is trained in western medicine but open/knowledgeable about non-western remedies (chinese medicine, naturopathy, herbal, even dietary changes! etc). My doctor poo-poos anything but the medicine he prescribes me (ie slippery elm, aloe vera) and I'd really love a doctor who is knowledgeable and cares about all different kinds of treatments so i'm not just out there trying things blindly.

If anyone has any recommendations I'd be thrilled. Thanks!

Hi Nicole - just saw your post. I'm happy with my Doctor at Mount Sinaii (did I spell that right?). I'm told it's the best place in NYC at least. My doctor is pretty open-minded, and although she doesn't advocate alternative treatments (and I think that's appropriate) she happily discusses them and is of the attitude that if you want to try it you should try it. She has a nutritionist colleague that you can go to if you want to talk diet/ food that she works with. Basically my overall experience with the practice here has been very positive, and markedly better than I'd had at previous places in the City.

Good luck finding the right person. It makes a big difference to feel you're being looked after by someone decent and supportive.

If you want an "integrative" doctor who specifically uses diet and alternative treatments but have a western medical background, there are Ronald Hoffman and Leo Galland. Both have treated IBD fairly extensively I think.

Not in NYC, but my doctor is in Highland Park, NJ. He doesn't bring up alternatives with me but will happily discuss them if I bring them up.

Just do a search for either and they'll come up. They are both in Manhatten.
