That's interesting. My daughter's GI didn't really indicate that mattered what brought her UC on. She's considered very good, so it made me wonder why more GIs don't offer this alternative. We've not used it though, so no experiences to share.

I'm currently on Cipro for 30 days to treat my Salmonella infection...I honestly feel like crap from the side effects right now, not to mention I'm still having loose BM's and some blood so I have no idea if it's the side effect of the Cipro, the Salmonella, my colitis or the start of a C Difficile infection. I'm now on my 11th day and the side effects of the fatigue, abdominal discomfort and loss of appetite have been kicking my ass. I feel like I haven't slept in a week, I constantly feel like I have a 10lb weight sitting on my abdomen and as soon as I start to eat my appetite completely goes away and I barely eat. I've been sucking down VSL3 to try and keep some normality to my digestive system.

I've been on anti-biotics several times and they have helped more than anything. Have taken courses of Flagyl, Cipro, and Vancomycin. Vancomycin worked the best.

Basically I would take a course and have a few months almost (but not quite) free of UC symptoms. The doctor didn't really feel comfortable to have me on Vanco long term though because of the chances of creating vanco resistant bacteria.

Immuran also worked for me. Now on Humira which seems to be working.

They've done a million tests for bugs and didn't find anything. I think the problem is more that my over-active immune system is killing all the beneficial bacteria, thus bad ones grow. So immune supressents work by calming the immune system allowing the good bacteria to grow back.

It was a big choice to go on Humira, the doctor realy didn't want to mess with Vanco. The side effects of Humira are scary, but was on immuran remicade for years, so hopefully it will just knock my immune system to normal.
