Has anyone been on this prescription? sounds pretty scary. Any side affects you want to share?

Hi i have been on 50mg once daily for about 6 months now and seem to be ok ferritin levels low but have iron tabs for it much better than pred which i have been on twice and had every side effect going still trying to lose weight from last lot of pred you have to have your bloods done a lot just to keep an eye on things but mostly i am ok on it

I have been on this for 3 1/2 years now. I took about 3 months of heavy flaring to make up my mind to take it. Right now I am on 100mgs Mon & Thurs and 50mgs rest of the days. I go in every 3 months to have my blood drawn but when I first started it, I was going weekly to be sure my body could handle it. The main side effects I had was fatigue, headaches, slight hair loss and nausea. I take mine at night to reduce the side effects but once my body got used to the med (about a month, month and a half) the sided effects stopped.

If you do a search on the forum, this has been discussed quite frequently. Look up 6mp. :)

I just started it about a week ago...noticed a little nausea the first day or two but after that nothing and heck, that could have just been the UC (my flare was HORRIBLE at that point). I don't seem to be having any issues with it now, my first blood test should be next weekend.

     I was on it for over seven years.  After the first two years it began to lose its effectiveness.  Doctor increased the dose from 50 to 100 mgm last summer....I felt terrible plus my bilirubin was doubled the normal limit and my white count was down to 1.6 and I was still flaring.  Doctor decreased it to 50 again...nada.  Started on Remicade in mid November, stopped the 6MP two weeks prior.  After 3rd infusion of Remicade suffered another flare.  Looking into surgery.

I have been on 50 mg per day of 6mp for about 6weeks. I too was quite worried when I started to learn about this drug. I found out much good information on this forum and became more concerned about the Prednisone I was on. I am down to my last 2 weeks on ( I hope ) it BUT, since I started to have flare problems again when I got down to 15 mg of pred, my doctor just the other day increased my 6mp dose to 100 mg per day. Yike, that sounds pretty high, but, maybe I'll get to the point where Red_34 is, and only take the higher dose a few times per week. Time will tell. wink

When my doctor told me that I had to take 6mp since I was unable to tolerate all mesalamine meds, I cried for a day or two after reading the side effects which are 4 pages long....
i had to weigh the odds of taking 6mp vs. flares and not being to live a normal daily life... i have a 22 month old son and when I would have severe flares, i was unable to care for him as i lived in the bathroom...
i started 50mg of 6mp last december and took it daily for a month. it actually stopped the bleeding and i could tell it helped my colon but had to stop due to upper GI problems and severe acid. after discontinuing 6mp, I did well for a few weeks and then flared really badly... i started 50 mg of 6mp again almost two weeks ago and am now taking capidex for acid as well. Im not having any bad side effects and am really hoping for this med to make me better as I have heard it has done wonders for people with UC.

as long as you have routine blood work and keep an eye on things, you will be ok...

Hi

I took 6mp for 6 weeks, but I was allergic to it, when you start it keep an eye out for cold and flu symptoms, bad aches and pains etc.. I was feeling really rough!

I am now hoping to get another dose of Pred before I start thinking about the next drug Cyclosporin

Been on 6mp for 7 months,not sure where the side effects are from[ALSO ON PRED,ANTI-ANXIETY MEDS].The only side effect was fatigue,which i corrected by taking the pred and the 6mp at dinner time.I seem to be going towards remission,normal stools more often-no blood at all-GGOD LUCK
