I was in complete remission for about
a year and was taking 6x asacol w/ 100mg Imuran. I was feeling great!
But two weeks ago, I was at a girl's house with some of her friends. One of them says "lets order some pizza!". Even though I was starved, I didn't want to object to that particular choice of food because I wanted to avoid an explanation. The pizza came, it was dominoes and the topping was pepperoni. I tried to resist it but my stomach couldn't. I had two slices. It just took a day and a half and all of a sudden I was having bloody stools which evolved into my current flare up.
Even though dominoes pizza is probably the worst choice for someone with UC, I cannot believe it just took two slices to do so much damage! I am now awaiting a prescript
ion of prednisone to try and push me out of this flare ASAP so that it does not interfere with my college classes.
Has anyone else gotten into a flare from just one poorly-chosen meal?

You know what, I think it's just coincidence. I'm sorry you're flaring again, though.

I'd like to think that my diet and VSL-3 matters. It gives you some control over the disease, mentally. I'm REALLY sorry you're flaring. You had a good year though!

ditto as fruitgirl!!
i think its a coincidence. For me pizza is a big No No!! but i sometimes do take a slice of it- can't resist! Sometimes my tummy is happy the next day & i feel better while sometimes it gives me blood
So even after couple of years i dnt know if eating pizza really matters... since i dnt know for sure so i try to avoid it.

I think its a coincidence too. I don't believe its your diet that makes you flare. It may exacerbate it but not cause it.
Bummer though. Flaring in college would suck

Sorry to say I agree with most here. I don't believe the pizza started the flare but it might have made things worse.

My doctor doesn't think what you eat has anything to do with flares. However, I have had ulcerative proctitis for over eleven years and crabcakes threw me into two very bad flares as did spaghetti and meatballs. Now I know better than to eat those foods. Actually, one slice of pizza now and then does not have any detrimental effect on me but I stay away from Dominoes....too garlicy.

Pizza is the ONE thing that I will probably never eat again. I can eat crusty bread, I can eat tomato sauce (a little), I can eat cheese and I can eat salami. But put it all together and it's toxic for me. Immediate poo reaction.
Thanks for the reminder to us to remember our own hot-buttons and not to push them even when we think we can. Sure hope you're back to golden soon!

I don't think the pizza caused the flare... my guess is that the inflammation was simmering in there and just hadn't shown itself yet.
Bummer, though. And undoubtedly pepperoni pizza isn't the most easily digestable thing.... but probably not the worst thing in the world, either.
I hope you get this flare un-flared soon!

Probably the pepperoni triggered your flare; there have been other members here who posted about
it in the past. (I avoid highly-processed deli-type meats because they seem hard for my intestines to deal with.) It's also impossible to know what's in the mass-produced tomato sauce that gets slathered on commercial pizza; that could give you grief, besides. Good luck with getting back in remission quickly! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I ate 4 pieces of pizza last saturday night, and had 2 more for lunch the next day. I usually do dominos but we ordered papa johns. I just watched what I ate for rest of weekend.

Dominos has made me crap since before I was ever diagnosed with UC...you need a good mom and pop pizza shop, and to NOT eat pepperoni as a topping lol.

I learned pepperoni was bad for me/to me years ago. I can actually eat pizza hut personal pan beef pizza with no fear. The personal pan size sets my portion for me. I have also found that some peoples sauce itself is just the killer (little cesars) as I only had bread sticks with the sauce.

oddly enough, when i had UC, the one thing that i could always handle, was little caesars pizza!
And i know that science says diet doesnt affect it, but my experience with it, showed me that it did.

Yes. Pizza is pro-inflammatory. It contains dairy (cheese) and nightshades (tomatoes). I will still eat pizza occasionally when I'm not flaring. I sprinkle it with lots of turmeric powder to help reduce its pro-inflammatory constitution.

It's not the pizza.
Were you taking the Asacol daily?

I was in remission a few years back and one weekend I ate sweetcorn and Pizza and I started flaring the next day.
I don't think it was a co-incidence

Last year I was feeling great. We were visiting St. Louis and decided to go the The Old Spaghetti Factory. Against my better judgment (I was really feeling good) I had the Spaghetti Vesuvius. OMG...it was SO good! It hurt so bad when it came out and there was a lot of blood. I really got stressed out because I thought I was going to go into a flare. However, after that one bout, I was fine. I did go into a flare a few months after wards, though. I must have had some inflammation going on for it to hit me so fast.

I also don't believe food causes flares...
that said, I find Pizza Hut was the worst, worst, worst thing for my gut. Haven't had it in 20 years, wouldn't risk it.

i think it might have been the pizza.
have you tried resting your colon for a couple of weeks on a diet of liquids? porridge and soup? very plain no spices, no tomato?

I think this is one of those individualistic things ... with that said, I too do not feel the pizza was to blame for the flare. Likely, the inflammation was already there and the pizza just aggravated it. I was scared the other night after I went out for Cajun food and ate fried pickles and blackened tilapia. I was miserable the next day and sweatin' it ... but, the day after that, no problems at all. Now I know I can splurge in small doses and NOT totally attack my digestive system with both spices and fried, greasy food. But boy it sure did taste good at the time!

3 weeks ago I almost re-started smoking because of the UC benefits, but I didnt...
And today, 3 weeks later, I'm in 99% remission. If I had re-started smoking, FOR SURE I would have thought it was because of the cigarette.
I'm telling you this because we all do non-scientific links throughout our lives.
Saying that pizza caused your flare up is the same type of link, imo.
