     I was lurking over in the Crohn's section and there are quite a few people over there who developed MS symptoms/neurologic conditions while on Humira.  Is this rare?  Seems like quite a few complaints about it.rolleyes

yes, it's rare, and remicade treatments carry the exact same risk.

warnings for the possible development of nervous system disorders, among other scary side effects, are posted on humira.com and remicade.com

Not one person in our trial developed any symptoms of MS or other neurological problems while on Humira. I know it is a small group (I think there were 12 of us, which actually was a fairly large sampling, they said, but still not a lot of people), but even so, no one had a problem with it, and in the end, all were on the drug, whether it was for the entire year in the double blind, or if they ended up in open label or both.

It is pretty rare. And like thecapecoddah said, remicade holds the same risks. I know two other people in my life who have been on one or both of these meds and not developed MS.

Hey Christine!

I am one of the VERRRY few who developed neurological side effects from Remicade. I had one infusion and it worked like a MIRACLE, literally overnight... The sad part is that 3 weeks later, parts of the right side of my body went numb, my memory went out the window and I started dropping everything.. it was so scary. My GP thought it might be Remicade induced MS, so I had to go to a neurologist and had a complete exam and a spinal tap, (which didn't hurt AT ALL) and everything came back normal... after about 6 weeks, the numbness was almost gone, so they are saying it was a side effect and not MS, either way, I can't do Remicade or Humira now... It's too bad because it really helped me TONS..

But, keep in mind, it is EXTREMELY rare, and if you didn't have any neuro side effects on Remicade, you probably wont' on Humira either.. they are similar drugs, only one is made with mouse protein (remicade) and humira is made with human protien. (that's what I understand anyhow) My GI originally wanted me on Humira but my insurance would only authorize Remicade so I went that route..

I wouldn't worry too much about it :) I hope this helps
