Hi Wishingtohelp,
I'm sorry your daughter is struggling with this ugly beast of a disease. We thought ours would have to get a colectomy, we were resigned to the surgery as of Dec '09, but then she started to turn around. We started the VSL around October or November '09, the yogurt in January this year. Not sure what is working without taking away variables one by one; first up the Imuran, and hopefully off the Remicade someday. She has been lucky (knock on wood) no bad opportunistic infections yet with the immunosupressants.
I believe being off gluten and controlling her diet such that she rarely gets to overeat and overload her system has brought her to this healing place. She is severely autistic so we have to control her diet anyway, I guess that works in favor of a restricted diet. Probiotics likely help keep her gut flora in balance. My sense is that her colitis came on as a result of many factors, one being she ate too much, and too much of food she couldn't properly digest.....also leaky gut. I was praying for a miracle back in December, and maybe they've been answered! All we can do is gather as much information as we can and try stuff and see what helps.
