Barium drink or drink prep from CT Scan?

So, Yesterday the pain and crazies pushed me over the edge and I went to the ER. What I was hoping for was to see someone about a stronger pain med to try than vicodin and to see the psych lady because I am/was going bug nuts. What actually happened was because the pain was abdominal they did a CT scan. I didn't think they would find anything but I knew if I left they would not be able to give me something for pain, etc. etc. Anyhoo, long story short about 4 hours after I drank that whatever solution it shot right out! I haven't had D like that for weeks and am so so hoping it didn't reactivate my colitis flare and that it was just escaping... Anyone have that contrast drink thing make a quick exit on them? For the most part my UC D had cleared up...

Oh, and the psych lady did give me some Xanax to try for the crazies, so hopefully my neighbors won't be frightened by a the crazy woman pawing at the upstairs window and muttering today, O.o...

Actually barium is constipating but when I drank it I too had diarrhea.  It's the UC that caused my diarrhea not the barium.  When my GI had told me that barium was constipating I was thrilled because I had had diarrhea for 2 straight years and was looking forward to having the barium temporarily stop it.  No such luck.

I had a barium follow-thru test in November of last year, and one hour after I'd returned home, all of it shot out of me. Once it was done, it was done, though. It didn't seem to further exacerbate the problems I was being tested for.

I had a small bowel follow through a couple of months ago and had to drink 24oz of the most disgusting tasting pancake batter consistency junk that I've ever been forced to swallow.. Getting it down was the only hard part though, no nausea or anything like that, it just tasted horrid.. By that evening, I was poo'ing it out, and I pood white poopies for 3 days... So weird...

I have heard that the barim you drink for the CT scan is more liquid like, and is more likely to cause diahrreah, (sp) and the stuff I drank is more likely to cause constipation... But everyoe is different I guess..

     Mine didn't shoot right out afterwards but the next day it sure did.  I had a  CT scan of the pelvic area on a Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon had a STAT flex sig.  Tried to take the Fleets enema, which was a total disaster, burned like the dickens and still trying to get things under control and that was  a month ago.

     I'm not agreeing to anymore CT scans either.  Read where doctors are ordering far too many of them and they are DANGEROUS!!

I also pooped when I drank it. Blegh. I almost puked too lol, but for a different reason.

I just posted a new topic on this but I also had the runs but after the CTscan. Pooped in my pants on the way home! I already have white mucous and blood....now I have more white stuff coming out due to the Barium. Hopefully it will clear up in a couple days.

i've had to drink barium 3 times and it all produces immediate diarrhea for me that's bright green.

Bananagirl..that doesn't sound right! I was told Barium comes out the same color it goes in. Did you happen to eat something green afterward?

I actually just had an MRI last friday of my small and large intestine and had to drink 3 bottles of barium before the test. It was a yellow 'smoothie', as they called it, but they had grape or cherry kool-aid powder to mix with it.  It also made me run to the bathroom with 4 times before the actual MRI!  They then proceeded to shoot me up with something that slows down your digestive track which I thought would be great.  Not so great, however, when after the MRI I threw up all over the pavement and inside the entry of some Mayo clinic building.  Then I had a few more bathroom trips of throwing up and diarehea before my dr appt in the afternoon. Was a great day for sure!  I couldn't decide what was worse - having to go through that or drinking the lovely cleansing liquid before a colonoscopy.  I actually think I decided I'd rather have a colonscopy than go through that again!

peaceandharmony, they told me it was barium- the stuff that makes your insides glow? but i had been fasting so it was all the drink. they warned me it would happen and said bright green diarrhea was fine.
