Chinese writing is so elegant. Would my name be the same in chinese or would it be different like Subdued's?

I am known here as MyUC.  My first name is Vinay.  I am 39 years old, male of Indian descent born and raised in the state of NY.  I am married to my college sweetheart, know each other for 20 years.  We have 3 great kids, 11, 8 and 5.  Two girls and the youngest a boy.  They all have a great sense of humour and are great to be with.  I am a practicing dentist in MA, near the border of CT.  I spend most of my time in people's mouths.  If I am not working I am with my family doing family things.  Things are busy now given the ages of our children but I wouldn't have it any other way.  We had two cats along the way but they have passed away due to natural causes.  I have come to find out I am allgergic to cats but still thinking about getting another one.

I love outdoor activities like hiking, bike riding, skiing, just being outdoors.  Even though I grew up just outside NYC in Westchester County my parents instilled in me a love for the woods, etc...  Hence I gravitate towards nature.  We have a house on a hill with a lot of landscaping, so I spend  a lot of time taking care of it while the kids run around. 

I love cooking, Asian food is my favorite, specifically japanese and thai and Indian is a close third runner up.  Pizza and Italien food are a favorite in my house as well.  I love music, I practice with music.  I love all kinds but I love classic 80's as my favorite with the likes of the Police, Prince, MJ, but I also like a ton of 90's stuff like third eye blind.  I also like some new stuff like Justin Timberlake and John Mayer. 

At last but not least I love this forum.  It's been a great help and I happy to have met you all.

Great thread Red! I'm a wild and crazy 51 year old woman from Sacramento, California and feel fortunate to live so close to the Sierras for hiking, rivers for kayaking, and the ocean beaches to walk on -- as you can read, I love the outdoors. Since I sit most of my day in a cube, it's great to get out and be active. I'm the Administrator of my company's Supplier Diversity Program, and I love my job! I travel quite often, and meet a lot of great people. I've been married for just a year (this past weekend!) and our favorite getaway is to the beach. SueBear....our favorite is your area! My husband has two incredible kids (22 and 24) and everyone gets along including his former wife...which makes for easy living and overall good for the kids. I love music, and my husband is a music junkie so we are very eclectic in music. I have to say my kickback music is Jack Johnson and Van the Man Morrison, my rock in roll is either Eric Clapton or Tom Petty...but I also love bands like Green Day. We are also foodies and winies; and love to cook together. We have two great puppies; one creme retreiver named (Mr.) Tully, and the other princess in the house, our cocker spaniel, (Miss) Lacey. I'm trying to write a book but don't have much time to sit down to do it, so if you know of any ghost writers, let me know, lol. So, that's me in a nutshell!

Hey guys,

My name is Chuck and I am 29 years old (6 mos from 30) and I'm from Ontario Canada. I am getting married in June to a wonderful girl who supports me through everything. I have a dog which the both of us love to death. One of my fav things to do is just head to a nature trail, a park, or the beach with the dog. She gives you the chance to get outdoors and enjoy nature the way it's meant to be enjoyed. I enjoy fishing, golfing, camping, rollerblading, cycling and I do play organized hockey (as long as my health allows). I try to work out when feeling good (it's hard sometimes I'll admit). I love watching sports on TV (one of the reasons my fiancee and I are looking for a house with TWO tv rooms, otherwise we're headed for divorce hahaha).

I really just like to relax, stay active, listen to my tunes and forget the world. Don't get me wrong though, I have a great group of friends and we try to get out and do things quite a bit as well, taking in sports games or camping etc. Love having beers with the boys, but I don't drink very often now...I'd rather feel good :)

My job is a sales rep in the fabulous steel industry. Can be stressful at times when it gets extremely busy, but I've mastered the art of leaving it at the door. I get more stressed watching a close hockey game ;) 

My goal is to one day be debt free, and own a motorcycle so I can head where I want when I want with no other worries.

My ex, who is Chinese, gave me my Chinese name. When I got married, my English name changed to Joy Chang. Chinese put the last name first: Chang Joy. Chang in Chinese is Zhang or 張. Zhang doesn't really mean anything. It is used as a measure word for paper. For example: 2 Zhang paper (2 pieces of paper), 4 Zhang paper (4 pieces of paper). Then came my first name. Chinese usually translate their names into English by taking the sound. That's why names like May are very popular. May May or 妹妹 is little sister in Chinese. Just like we use the words Mom and Dad to refer to our mothers and fathers, older brothers and sisters call their younger sister 妹妹. So May is a popular name in English for anyone who is a little sister. Also, Chinese generally uses two characters for first names; so my ex tried to find two characters that when put together sounded like Joy: hence Jo-I, which means Long 久 Love 愛. And that gives me my Chinese name Zhang Long Love or 張久愛.

Do you realize how HOT it will be, especially for you?  As I live in AZ I would like to offer a bit of advice if I may.  If you cannot be out this way before the end of May, you may want to wait until late Sept-Oct timeframe.  June is usually our hottest month on record because our monsoon storms start early to mid July and go through Aug.  Typical temps that time of year, Jun-Jul-Aug are 105 to 115 F.  Vegas is usually even hotter.  It is tough to get used to and an will not try to feed you that line of bull about it being a "dry" heat.  It is a dry heat, so much so that you don't realize how quickly you get dehydrated.  I'm sorry if you already know or have considered all of this, couldn't help myself I guess.  If you didn't know or would like more info please feel free to contact me.

Yes I do realize how hot it will be. We really don’t have much choice on when we go. Last year when we purchased a new car we received a certificate for a flight and 2 nights accommodations for 2 to Las Vegas. We have to use the certificate by the end of this October. To use it we had to mail it in with 3 choices of dates, each being 30 days apart and hope the dates are available. A few weeks ago we received confirmation that we are going at the end of August. This is also a time when our daughter is out of school. They will allow us to extend our trip beyond the 2 nights and purchase airfare for our daughter. We are going to rent a car for about one week and visit the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. Thank goodness for air-conditioning. We already booked our hotel rooms for the road trip. I was surprised to learn that some hotels at the Grand Canyon South rim are not air conditioned. They say that the night time temperatures are very cool. I didn’t want to take a chance so we got a room with Air conditioning.

My name is Claudia, and I'm 31. I grew up in Kansas and moved to Oregon about a year and a half ago. I've been married to my high school sweetheart for almost 8 years, and I'm a stay at home mommy to our 3 1/2 year of daughter. I have my BA in Journalism, and worked in the marketing field before we moved. I LOVE to read, hike, travel, and spend time with my family. I also love music...Tom Petty, Dave Matthews, Van Morrison, 60's pop, Arcade Fire...and the list goes on! My favorite band at the moment is the Swell Season. You guys should check them out...very relaxing! :)

Originally from Toronto, Ontario and moved to Texas 12 years ago. I met my husband in an IRC chat room and after trying to decide which country to live in, the weather convinced me to move here. I have 2 grown children – 1 in Barrie Ontario and 1 in Cleveland, and two beautiful grandchildren – one in Ontario and one in Cleveland. I am a LAN administrator in an elementary school. I just turned 60 a couple of months ago. I have always had stomach “issues” since I was very young and was finally diagnosed almost 5 years ago. I love Sci-Fi and dabble in writing Star Trek novels on a fanfiction website. I love Old Time Radio shows and have an extensive collection. I crochet, knit, read “who dun’its”, and love 50s music.

I am Anita, I live in the Metro Vancouver area, but I am originally from SW Ontario. I think I've lived in Vancouver for about 18 years now. I have been married for nearly 13 years, no kids. I previously worked in the investment industry, most recently in mutual fund sales compliance. I quit my job during my flare, a year and a half ago, thinking the stress was causing my issues. I do believe that not working is what helped get me into remission, and I sure did not miss working, so I consider myself retired now.

My main project is achieving physical fitness. I have battled weight my whole life, and it is a battle since my main problem is overeating, quite simply. So I workout daily now and really focus on healthy eating. I enjoy the working out, but not overeating is a constant battle

I have other projects I need to get back into - like home renovations/improvements. That was all dropped when I got sick and I just haven't picked it up again. And I REALLY need to get into landscaping/gardening. Our yard is rapidly falling into wrack and ruin. I know nothing about gardening though so I need to learn it all from scratch. What I really need is to win a yard makeover and have professionals come in and do it all for me. :)

Subdued & Elephant Pipe, your fantastic Chinese script reminds me of something I forgot to mention above. Figure skating is my favorite spectator sport. I'm a huge fan of the Chinese pairs skaters Xue Shen & Hong-Bo Zhao!!!!!! It was very satisfying to see them win the Vancouver Olympics gold medal because I've followed their competitions for ca. 12 yrs. NOBODY ever did throws as high 'til they came on the scene. They are superb athletes who also mastered artistic presentation since their debut in the 1990s. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I liked watching figure skating during the olympics too, but I don't remember seeing them. I just know I liked our two from Michigan, the brown-haired girl and the blonde guy. I would have liked to have seen the Chinese skaters.

That Kim Yu-Na girl from Korea was really good! And I liked the Japanese girl we had on our team too.

Elephant Pipe-- FYI, you can see Shen & Zhao on YouTube-- also many other figure skating champions. I, too, was very impressed by our Mirai Nagasu & hope she'll succeed at winning gold in future competitions. It's a tough pursuit because even the most talented need lots of luck to avoid injuries or family distractions. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Red, that's great your Husband got to keep his job. Ford at least seems to have decent management going for them and some good products. I worked for a fairly small company, Walbros, up north of you, assuming you live in Detroit area. We made fuel systems for small motors like boats, bikes, lawn mower, etc.. , but things just slowed down and we had a few jobs moved out of the US some years back didn't help.

By the way, nice idea for a topic Red :)

I'm about to turn 40 ( in Aug ). Male. Self employed as a horse shoer. ( yes just like in the old time western movies. I nail shoes on horses feet ). I live in NE ohio. I love to hunt... whitetail deer is my passion. I also love to garden, and can/preserve what I garden. I raise my own beef. Am fairly self sufficient I guess. I also have my toy... a far from stock 94 Jeep wrangler. Its my project. And I also take in offroading and use it in my hunting. Divorced, no kids. A live in girl friend of over 3 years. One dog.. a australia heeler/ lab cross. Currently saving and workin to buy some acreage... and build a house on it. AM back in college also... studying construction engineering/ architect/ surveying.

Zippy, yeah I live just west of Detroit - 3 miles from the border actually. Don't want to name the city on here because it's a small place but I'm sure you probably know what it is. I definately got nervous though when they were talking about lay offs and we know a couple of guys in my hubby's shop that got a pink slip. My hubby's a construction painter at the Research and Development center of Ford and just recently got consolidated into the carpenter/mason crew.

Unclebubba - since I started living out my childhood fantasy of horseback riding I have watched the farrier at the barn where I've ridden, a number of times. Wow!! You sure have my respect!!

Hi! I'm 34 years old and live near Annapolis, Maryland with my husband and my two goofy Labs, Ellie and Zeus. I just finished my PhD in English literature and teach at a local community college full time.
I guess it's not surprising that I love to read, and god knows that UC gives me plenty of opportunities!

I also love to hike and try to take a "hiking vacation" every year (UC permitting), although I still am trying to get my husband to see these as fun (he insists that a "hiking vacation" is an oxymoron.

It was great "meeting" everyone.
