My GI wants me to start using Canasa along with the Rowasa I am currently taking.  Has anyone ever used them at the same time?

He suggested taking the Canasa in the morning and to continue the Rowasa at night.

Any thoughts????

Sounds good.
I've done that... I've also done a Rowasa morning and another Rowasa at night, but the morning requires me to lie still awhile and that's difficult, schedule-wise.

I've also had the canasa script written "after each BM" and have carried them with me and used them wherever I was during the day.....
So, I'm not exactly sure what your question was, but what you've been told to do seems good and standard.
It is very hard to OD on rectal mesalamines because they work topically as the medicine hits the walls of the colon.

When you used the Canasa during the day, it stays in ok? Its been a long time since I have used them, and I used to only use them at bedtime.

Sure, they stay in just fine for me. I used to use OTC suppositories for hemmies, like.... Anusol or some brand? - and the canasa stayed in as well as those.

The only thing is that sometimes I'll pass some gas and it'll bring a little of the waxy substance with it.

It's really such a tiny bit of medicine, so by the time it melts and spreads around in there, there's not much to leak (at least in my experience...)

Just went to the doctor today - said to use Canasa in the morning and then one at night for 1 month.  I've never done one in the morning before work - sure hope that works out ok.  Doctor said it should be fine........guess will see.  Glad it's the weekend......good time to try it.

Good luck to you.........I hope doing this for a month it will clear up my flare thats been going on for a long time.

When I was first diagnosed I only used Canasa and it worked instantly for me. Hope it works just as well for you!!!!

I was curious about this as well..I wanted to work in the suppositories I have left to my enema taper..was thinking of doing them either in the morning or night on the days off.

 I waited until I ate bfast and had a BM and then took the Canasa this AM and I have to say that this is the best I have felt in a long time.  And I only had that one BM!!!!!!  I usually have 2-3 in the AM and sometimes 1 in the afternoon!!!!!  Just sucks taking so much medicine!!!!!  But if it works, I will do it for as long as I have to!!!!!

Well, the so much medication is a matter of perspective. You need it. Think of the possible alternatives such as pred, immunosuppressants or biologics.

If you can use the 5ASA meds....understand what they do and how they can be used for hopefully as long as possible.

It's lots of meds...but no problemo to me considering the length of time I've been able to take it and the clear scores on my c-scopes. 21 years seems a drop in the bucket....

Now....not all can take them and have had to use the other meds, some have had to have their colons removed.

Do what you have to do and focus on the plusses rather than believe it's a lot of meds.

You will be tapering to maintenance or maybe get off them (which isn't always a positive)...at least you'll have meds to use when you flare and learn to recognise symptoms and treat earlier.

It's all good....better than having nothing at all.
