How long was your longest Flare, average remission, and longest remission?

My longest flare was 2.5 months, my average remission is 2 years though I just made it for 4 years so that is my longest remission.

That's not bad. My longest flare was six months. I've had three flares. The first time, I was in remission for one year. The second time, for two years.

I guess I never counted...The first 2 years of UC for me were absolute misery...sick all the time, lost lots of weight, weird color skin...

Well, I was diagnosed last May - soon to be a year and no remission yet but really close a couple times!  Hoping for 6 MP to kick in and near remission is good enough for me right now!

My longest remission to date has been 1 year. My longest flare 7 months. I have had many flares and have been diagnosed for 10 years. My flares seem to be getting longer and less responsive to meds over the years.

I've been flaring now for 2 months and it doesn't even show signs of getting under control. I am tired of rushing to the bathroom and telling my kids I am so sick all of the time! It's terrible!

My first flare was 4 1/2 months long. I never got diagnosed though. It cleared up on its own and I was in med free remission for about 5 years.

I started having symptoms in June 2001 and was diagnosed in September. I was in flare constantly until March 2006. Since then I've been in remission.

So, almost 5 year flare and now 3 year remission.

     Wow Judy, that's a long flare!  My longest flare was last year, it lasted seven months.  When diagnosed in 98 my flare lasted two months.  Longest remission was two years.  Average flare lasts two to three months.  Keeping my fingers crossed that I will never flare again...in remission since Nov 1st.

first flare over a year, then intermittently over the years probably 4-5 months at a time, for numerous times. longest remission was almost 1 year while on prednisone, and now currently almost 2 years.

Yes, my flare was long. It was also really bad - like anywhere from 10-30 trips to the bathroom each day. If Remicade hadn't been available, I would have long since had surgery.

Bringing this post back because I was interested in the same questions. My flares usually last 3-4 months(seems like years and I don't really track them). My worst have been after giving birth to both my kids. I would say my longest remission has been 1 1/2 years, but I'm hoping now that I'm not having anymore kids that it will get longer! I've currently been in remission for a year(hope I didn't just jinx myself). I'm still taking 6 Asacol a day.

How do you guys keep taking meds when you are in remission so long? It gets harder and harder for me to convince myself that I need them. I know it is silly. I've had some horrible flares. I should want to take the meds every day forever to keep that away but it is amazing how the mind will let you forget all that pain!

I've been in remission for a year now, and haven't even THOUGHT about stopping my meds. I never, ever, ever want to be that sick again. Never. I know that meds won't keep me from eventually flaring again, but I fully believe they'll keep me from flaring that badly again, and will keep me in remission for longer than if I were to quit taking them. And, I don't want to risk mesalamine not working. I've heard too many stories about people who quit taking mesalamine, only to not have it work when they flared again. Besides, I know this is a chronic disease and that it won't go away.

Interesting that the meselamine stops working.... I am only taking Asacol and not using the enemas at all as I'm not flaring. Does this mean when I do flare the enemas might not work for me?? Good for you for still doing them even in remission. If we had the foam I would do it, but I just can't bring myself to do them when I'm not flaring... I know, bad me!

I really don't know, Jen.
I've read a couple of studies that show people who use enemas twice weekly in addition to oral meds stay in remission for longer than people who only use oral meds...that's more than enough incentive to keep me using them. My GI thinks it's great that I use them, and definitely agrees with what the studies show.

Longest flare? Lol.......approximately 15 years. I never had control of my Uc nor did I know any better (long story). I just lived with it the best I could. I've had Uc for 18 years, so sporadically over the years I've had about 3 years (accumulative) of remission.

Longest flare 3.5 bloody years then had it taken out!! Now in colon free heaven!

2004, first flare lasted 6 weeks after quitting cigs.  Started Asacol and went back to smoking.  Remission for 4 years as I continued to smoke.  Quit smoking for good 2008. 2nd flare 2008 lasted 3 months.  Currently flarring for 10 months, but still not smoking!

My initial flare lasted 2-3 months including the whole dx part. I was in remission for 6 years. Then I got preggo. This flare had been going on for over a year, although not totally debillitating it is still VERY frustrating.

Flare Early 2004 - August 07.. Remission, 6 months.. back to the flare

first flare was in 2002 that lasted almost 10 months soon after I was dx with UC.
was in a 3 year remission until 2005 where I had a 3 month flare
and another 4 year remission, although with slight flares that would only last a couple of days to a week and then suddenly disappear.
then in 2009 another flare started and even though I've had 3 infusions of Remicade so far still in a flare.

So I'm going to give it a few more days if nothing gets better, I'm going to call my Dr and get him to refer me to a surgeon. I wanna go camping again >:(
