Hi

I am still unsure after 15 years if I have UC or Crohns.  Currently I am taking Colozal, Cortenemas, Flagyl, Canasa and Probitoics.

Yesterday I took a pain pill that I had leftover from a c-section that I had in 2007, my rectum area was causing me excrutiating pain.

Today was the first morning that I had ONE visit to the bathroom with a NORMAL bowel movement in months.

My norm is 10-15 times with urgency, pain, D, Blood, etc.  I know that pain pills are constipating and not prescribed but I have had the best morning in that I have had in months!!

Does anyone have similiar experiences?

What pain med did you take? If it is a narcotic one or with codeine...it can slow down the colon.

Yes Stacy, I sometimes have to take hydrocodone for the terrible cramps and rectal pressure I get after numerous bowel movements. The next day my bowel movements are less frequent. The pain pills are addicting and I take them sparingly. It says on the bottle to take one or two every six hours!!! If I took two, I would surely be in la la land. I take one pill about twice a week, only when I feel the pain is overbearing. Although, I admit, it is tempting to take more.

The pain pill is oxycodone, which i think is a narcotic. I can see why they are addiciting, it really helped the pain!!

oxycodone is probably not a drug to be taken frequently for so many reasons. Oxycodone will ease your symptoms but i usually found that the following next few days were a lot more painful.They constipate you very quickly, the gas pains that generate in the bowel because of constipation can become very intense.I do take pain killers, but as a very last resort.

I just wanted to mention that NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are also bad for UC.

The American Journal Of Gastroenterology's position is that people with IBD should avoid Ibuprofen.
Popular NSAID's include Motrin, Advil, Nuprin and others. Now researchers think there is also some evidence that Ecotrin and aspirin are also bad for UC and Crohns.

I know it sucks. Don't shoot me, just reporting what I've read.

Thanks for the responses. I just took it once and it really did help with the pain. I know not to take it frequently. I never take ibuprofen products although sometimes i REALLY want to!!

I take one aspirin tablet (325 mg) daily because my cardiologist prescribed it. My GI frowned, but said cardio trumps GI; so I take my aspirin. I was also prescribed Oxycodone 5 mg/acetaminophen 325 mg (percoset) “every 6 hours as needed for pain” by my PCP for UC pain. She said “it’s your choice to be in pain or not”. On good days I don’t take any, and on bad days I may take one or two. Once I took three in a day. I know they are constipating, and addictive, but when I take them my guts don’t hurt!

I just got a prescription for Percocet too. I noticed the same thing. I thought it really helped with pain and slowed down D for sure too. I know I have to be careful with them, but what a relief!

You don't want to rely on narcotic pain meds unless it's absolutely necessary. When I was at my worst, my doc gave me a script of Darvacet and it really helped with the urgency and pain. However, I became constipated after being on them for a couple days and truthfully, C is way worse then D in my opinion. If you use them sparingly though it should be fine. Have you ever tried an anti-spasmodic such as Bentyl? Bentyl can ease abdominal spasms and sometimes slow down bowel movements.

Just take a Colace (stool softner) if you start to become constipated, colace is a quite harmless product and is not a stimulant, it works by drawing fluid into your stool.

Some here can tolerate ibuprofen without issues, I take it fir my back and cut the tabs in half plus only take it once per day if I need it...I would certainly not take it during a flare
