I am going to give it a go and try to eliminate dairy and then gluten for a few weeks and see how it goes. I enjoy eating salads for lunch, and don't mind leaving off the croutons and using gluten free soy sauce (I dress my salads with soy sauce often), and dinner is doable.
But breakfast is challenging me!! I can cook an egg, but I don't want that every day and I don't like oatmeal. I am really struggling to come up with some dairy and gluten free breakfast ideas. Anyone have suggestions?? (pre-requisite is that it be easy-mornings with the kids can be hectic)
Thanks!

I am gluten free at the moment and I've been having a gluten free muffin or rice cereal with rice milk.

How about
gluten-free bread? Soy yogurts? Gluten free granola? There are lots of gluten and dairy free products but you might have to look at a health food store.

Another tip is that breakfast does not have to be "breakfast food". It is perfectly ok to cook a little extra for dinner and warm that the day after for breakfast.

I'm an egg person so every morning I make an omelet usually with spinach.
A couple other ideas come to mind:
gluten free pancake or waffle with fruit or honey on top (from store bought mix)
you could make these up in a big batch and freeze to take out in the morning and heat them up, save time
gluten free muffin (from store mix) with nuts and raisins.
I make mine with almond flour because I'm grain-free also and store bought gluten-free mix won't work for me
I make a batch once a week and freeze to use when hungry. Easy-peasy.
Some stores sell gluten free baked goods, just not in my small town.
Trail mix: raisins, nuts (for protein), coconut, craisins, other dried fruit you like. With a banana.

I'd do gluten-free cereal (rice chex, etc) with almond milk.... we just bought almond milk for the first time and it is SO yummy!

Thanks all-I was hoping I wouldn't have to go seek out gluten free products, but I guess for breakfast, I can do it! I'll have to try the almond milk-I think that would be a good alternative for me for a couple of things (though I am not really a big milk drinker), and I love the idea of rice chex!!
I do like eggs, and I think I'll keep doing that some too-but I just don't like having the same thing everyday. Thank you all for giving me some ideas for alternatives. Next time I am at the store, I'll look at the gluten free products. And I know there is a gluten free bakery up the road from me-I should try that too.
We'll see how it goes!

I have been following the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet" for one week now, and it is a challenge to find a grain-free breakfast that I find satisfying. I have also started making my own yogurt, which after letting it "ferment" for 24 hours, is supposed to be okay for some lactose intolerance because the yogurt bacteria eat all the lactose during the fermentation. So, for breakfast, I have been eating homemade yogurt with fruit, sometimes with honey or nuts on top. Also eggs. I also made some pancakes that worked out pretty well, mixing almond meal (basically very finely ground almonds, so it's essentially almond flour, but there's no grain, all nuts), bananas, and egg to bind them together. My whole family ate those with me and liked them.

are you close to a Trader Joe's? they have the best gluten-free panakes! OMG yum! they also carry a gluten-free rice bread, which is pretty good when toasted. also, most oatmeal has gluten, so be careful. Bob's Red Mill sells a gluten-free oat.

Gluten free waffles are great. I top 'em with a little butter and natural, flavored apple sauces. Whole Foods had some GF muffins that were out of this world. They came four to a pack. They were really expensive, but worth it for an occasional treat.
Cascadian Farms has a frozen winter squash you can nuke and top with a little butter, honey and cinnamon and make a grain-free porridge of sorts. Baked apples and pears are nice for breakfast, too. Or try a GF cereal with rice or almond milk.

Whole foods carries great gluten free and dairy free bagels under the Udi name. I also use Smart Balance margarine. If you get the one that says Light and "Parve" it means it is dairy and casien free. There is a wonderful dairy free cheese product called Daiya cheese shreds - also at Whole Foods.
Sometimes I take a couple of pieces of Katz gluten free bread (very moist, fluffy and sweet) and make a quick grilled cheese sandwich with the Daiya and the parve Smart Balance and that is a yummy breakfast.
Another light fave breakfast is the So Delicious coconut milk yogurt with some fruit - I use the canned peaches or fruit cocktail in its own juice. It's the kind of breakfast you can eat at work or standing at the kitchen counter. The yogurt comes in lots of flavors including chocolate - tastes like chocolate pudding. It is dairy free and gluten free.
I can't eat eggs and my stomach doesn't want much in the mornings so I have toast (again the Udi bagels or the Katz challah bread) and some almond butter or the fruit and coconut yogurt.
Sometimes I make a pizza from the Udi or Katz pizza shells with the Daiya cheese for dinner and save half for breakfast... Mmmm cold pizza has always been a fave.
Katz gluten free makes some delicious muffins. A brief warming in the microwave and dairy free Smart Balance and I am good to go.
Sometimes I take a Udi bagel and some of the dairy free Daiya cheese, a drop of tomato sauce and a coupls of slices of Hormel turkey pepperoni (gluten free) and a couple of mushrooms and pop it in the toaster oven.... a yummy pizza bagel!
There are lots of options and you will find the more you vary your choices, the more satisfied you will be.
