Hi all,

Not feeling too good today........azathioprine has kicked in I think and making me feel a little bit vacant and wobbly. Gob a nasty sore throat too.

Anyway, I'm having a sigmoidoscopy on Tuesday and was wondering what to expect. I've had a fair few colonoscopys usually with the bowel prep and sedation.......My doc says I dont need the bowel prep this time as I'll have an enema when I get to hospital. Will I have some sedation does anyone know?

No, typically there is no sedation for a sig. It's not as invasive and is fairly quick. It will be uncomfortable but over before you know it.

I understand the "norm" is no prep or sedation but I requested the same as for a colonoscopy because I am a very anxious person.  I still hate the prep but too nervous not to have  the sedation!

I've had many sigmoidoscopies. If it's the rigid one it is an oblong metal object about 15cm. The GI puts gel onto it to insert it easily. It's uncomfortable and then a bit sore when he turns the corner to see a little further. The moment I even hint at pain he takes it out. It's over before you know it and is bearable. The flexible sigmoidoscopy is a longer (about 30cm) plastic looking thin pipe that is inserted once you've had an enema to flush everthing out. It takes a bit longer and a lot of air is pumped into you which I found quite uncomfortable but also is bearable. You're probably having the first one. I usually have that, only had the flexible one once.

Oh thanks for the posts.

I had a flexi sigmoidosocpy and there really was nothing to it. I did have a sedation and watched the whole thing on TV so that was a first for me! Would appear I have the last 10 inches still inflamed. 10 weeks of prednisolone, 6 weeks into azathioprine and a session with IV steroids. I'm so tired of all the medicine...............bloatedness and talking non stop about my colon. I'm still NOT going to give into it and will continue to work though! I know I read on here some people are so much more chronic than me for so much longer but I cant seem to see the point of medicating for the rest of whenever! I'm 39 and this is my 19th year following diagnosis. Past 3 years in and out of progressing worsening bouts.......this one now into it's 6 month. Am I jus feeling sorry for myself? When do people seriously consider just having it all taken away? For good I guess I mean!
