David Klein Revisited

I was just sorting through my old books yesterday and came across David Klein's "Self Healing Colitis and Crohn's." It reminded me of the months when my colitis first became uncontrollable and I was desperate for alternatives to medication. I remember this book made me so angry because it preaches a diet that seems impossible to follow (mostly fruits; some vegetables; nothing else). I decided to check out the Amazon reviews for the book and found nearly all of them to be 5 stars. I am starting to wonder if this is some conspiracy (i.e. "fake" people posting loads of favorable reviews) or if all these people really have great success on this diet which would be spartan even to a vegan. I then looked at Klein's supposed PhD and found that his degree from the University of Natural Health only required half a dozen courses and a 3000 word thesis, for which he used the text of his book. I have a PhD in Biology which took me 6 years of incredibly hard work to obtain, including lots of research and writing. In addition, the university does not seem to be accredited from any reputable institution.

So as my colitis begins acting up again I re-ask the question: is this guy for real and has this diet really worked for at least some people (obviously diet does not work for everyone)? Are any of you really able to eat only fruits and feel satisfied? Or is there something more we should know about David Klein?

I tried it years ago after being diagnosed. It didn't work for me and I became highly skeptical of his claims. In fact my opinion on DK will probably stir up controversy, but I don't believe he has UC.

Thanks for weighing in guys. AZYooper, I actually checked out Amazon again and they do show a verified purchase label but only I and one other person (out of 30) posted reviews with these labels. So you are totally right to be wary.

ive tried david kliens diet. i have met another person who tried it as well. (i dont know what the result was) but the thing he used was carrot juice. that is the worst thing for any IBD flare. I would also not suggest any high fruit diets. from everyone i know they say you have to reduce the fruit to reduce candida. also the people on who healed them selves on raw vegan or those i spoke to (who had ibd)  actually did it by eating high fats (which i wouldent do) then switching later to scd or another diet. (ive also now heard that high fat can cause candida? so i dont know at this point. any whoo.  I have heard bad things about klein and i have heard good things.  I have heard of one person healing from him she was on the rawfoodsupport.com . still though i beleive it is wrong to charge for any healing information. i think if you have a serious illness and found something that works for you, you should not charge for it. you really shouldent. its wrong really wrong. thats why i post this info, i always felt if i ever find some improvement and i found something to take the pain away ill post it for free. Ive come across so may people saying they can heal ibd and then charging really alot of money for it. if they are christian of any other realigion then i dont know what to say really. I dont think Jesus sat there healed people and then said that will be £19.99 please. really, it makes me so angry that people make money off ill people. well at least im not in the loo all the time now. and im not in pain. thank god:) i cant live with that. imagardener2  i think my gerald green diet is more like yours though. i think its bascalliy the scd diet. klein says that you should eat 70% fruit and something like 20% green and 10% fat all vegan so you mainly eat fruit. Gerald just says limit the fruit. and he used meat. i dont  disagree with raw foods as i expereinced many benifits to it even when i did do the high fruit. its just that i coulent get rid of the bleeding by doing fruit.  when i switched to bacsically what your doing the bleeding stopped and so far has not come back. ( i keep praying) do you also use that phsillium husk powerder. just wondering.

There are those who believe diet is the bees' knees....there are others who just adjust their intake somewhat. But, I've never had any flare get worse with eating anything. I'm not talking food symptoms, I'm talking flare symptoms.

Some foods will improve some aspects of symptoms that could be perceived as improving a flare. There are many of us who increase fibre supplements to decrease diarrhea and others who stop food altogether. It won't change the inflammation, however.

Oh, I guess you can tell I don't think diet is the bees' knees..groan.

Yeah diet doesn't help me but if it helps you that's great. But, I don't think a bad diet can CAUSE UC.

Yes, there's strength in restriction and hope for the results. WE all do it out of having control and if it does improve some symptoms, then why not.
Some also are in incredible denial.

There's a time where balance is necessary.....I had incredible sense of freedom when I could eat what I wanted, even though some didn't agree or caused discomfort. Whatever....

I like my meds, they serve a purpose far greater than just helping my UC. With them, I have control and lots of freedom regarding bathrooms. I've never once had to worry about where the bathroom was when I'm out. Ignorance is bliss, but only until reality hits.

cool that makes since as i found out its a carb. I didnt ask green about it but he bascilly says the same things as the scd so i guess he would not approve of it. crohnsboy used scd as well he told me to reduce my sugars as well funny that. His site is free. he doesnt charge he also has some good infor.

oh i didnt say this, when i tried the high fruit diet my poops were actually quite amazing. sometimes it was just like something coming out of an animal. really well formed. all was good but the bleeding. the raw foodies who tried to help me said my poops would be amazing. they were right except the bleeding that went on day after day. so thats why i went to someone else. it is so important to stop that bleeding or it will get you. oh well. i did expereince this though no panic attacks increased energy joints felt better energy levels better. so it wasnt a completly bad experience and i do miss eating fruit. i guess the final staw was that juice fast i did on the carrot juice. i did drink alot but wow it was a mistake. really. be careful of this really. I do post as well because i so was desprate to get rid of this ibd. so desprate that i was putting my life frist. I was really thinking i dont care if i go on any more. sad but true that is what i was thinking. that is why i have actually and i mean i really have tried these things. i decided to use myself as a guinipig. lol. and still do actually

I too have consulted with David Klein re; my daughter's UC. I read his book soon after her diagnosis and in my right mind (which I'm still not in btw) I would have dismissed it as total hippy bull. After speaking to him, I too disliked him even more. He is arrogant. He can't explain why his diet works (except for the fact that it gets rid of "toxicity"). However, maybe I am naive, but I don't believe the reviews are false and I do think he had UC. I think eliminating certain foods (ie. grains, dairy, processed sugars) works well for some people with IBD. He might have had success on a much less restrictive diet. Maybe not. Hellokitty, I've read the book "The Fungal Link" by Doug Kauffman. He says carrot juice is a great antifungal? All so very confusing.

Yes. I cannot drink juice, because I'm fructose intolerant. There is also a whole bunch of fruits I cannot eat. They make my colitis symptoms substantially worse. But everyone's condition is different. I would not be surprised if a fruit and veggie diet helped a few people who have colitis. But it's not going to cure people like David Klein claims.

I brought the David Klein's book and had email communication with him
I found him helpful but the most i could last on his diet was 5 days

after the 5 days i stopped his diet and for about 3 weeks i was in remission but then full flare up and have been since
But at the same time, my skin was pale as and i was anemic from it.

i keep thinking i might try it again but my willpower to just eat the limited fruits and juices has stopped me from doing it

I realize this post is from several years ago, but I stumbled upon it and felt compelled to comment. I was diagnosed with U.C. in 2000, spent 9 years in remission and it came back as Crohns after the birth of my second daughter in 2009. I tried the treatments from the doctors and the SCD for months. I then found David Kleins book and felt a lot like the Scottg - angry about limiting my diet even more, but I was desperate and felt I had nothing to lose. I followed it to a "T" and the results were nothing less than miraculous! With in one week I was seeing improvement, with in one month I was symptom free! I can totally admit it was very hard to stick to and depressing at times, but the results kept me motivated. After 6 weeks I slowly added grains back into my diet with out any real trouble. Its long a story that I won't get into here, but I ended up getting sick again after 4-5 months (stress, depression) and could not stick to the diet the second time. I am now on remicade for the crohns and am doing very well, but David Kleins book changed my life. I eat completely differently now and feed my family as much fruit and veggies as they can eat. I recommend this book to anyone I know who has an autoimmune disease, I think it would work for any of them. I only wish I had known in 2000 what I know now because I know with out a doubt I wouldn't have gotten sick again. The remicade has obviously helped me a lot, but I also know that if I did not eat as I do now (a lot of fruits and vegetables - limited grains/animal products) I would be sick again. If you are suffering from UC or Crohns give this book a chance! As to the reviews on Amazon, I wrote one of them and meant every word!!
