Has anyone heard of this???

I talked to a friend last night and her husband has been sick (in and out of the hospital) for 6 months now.  He cannot eat anything without throwing up.  He literally can drink water and then throw is back up within a minute or two.  He has lost over 100 pounds (thank goodness he was a very large man to start with...).  At first they thought cancer but he has been through tons of testing. 

 

Last night she told me that he was diagnosed with colitis.  I asked if it was UC and she said she thought that was what they said.  She said he was put on some medicine (I don't know what) for UC and has a follow up appointment with another GI doctor (he has been to a number of doctors in the last 6 months).  His main symptom is throwing up EVERYTHING.  As far as I know he does not have rectal bleeding or a bad problem with diarrhea.  I have never heard of UC causing you to throw up everything you eat while having very little to no colon cramps, diarrhea or bleeding.  This is so strange to me but I did not question her too much.  She has been through so much and is a little defensive about getting advice at this point.  Has anyone heard of something like this???

I've heard of people puking, but not without the colon being involved... weird.

Yeah I always think of puking as more of a Chron's thing.

I would first think CD as well...

I think doing lots of research and asking if she's wanting to set up some questions to be asking the doctor, knowing what meds her husband is on, getting copies of reports, etc would be helpful in her knowing what's going on.

Has he had an upper scope done?

I wonder if he has a hiatal hernia or something like that. Obesity can cause/exacerbate it..etc.

Has he had an MRI done?

Has he been tested for h.pylori..etc?

I sure hope they find the cause, it's truly a distressing situation for him/her.

I agree - it does not sound like UC to me. My friend is a precious sweet lady and I feel so bad for her. He did have an upper scope done but they did not find anything. He also had an MRI but they also found nothing. I was very over weight at the begining of this ordeal but know is extremely skinny. I know he has been tested for infections and parasites but I do not know what tests exactly have been conducted. He was scheduled for a colonoscopy but he threw up so much of the prep that they were unable to perform the scope. They did not reschedule him for another one which I think is strange. If he cannot drink the prep is there another way he could be prepped for the scope? Maybe if he were admitted to the hospital they could prep him there - I just don't know....

Maybe it was diverticulitis. When infected it causes bad vomiting. Sounds kinda like Colitis too.

My guess is that your friend has mentioned puking to explain the weight loss. Not a lot of people (Possibly her husband) wants people to know that he cant get off the toilet pot. I may be wrong but suppose Im also like this.
Hope he gets better soon once the meds kick in..

that cant be ulcerative colitis at all .. maybe chrons affecting the stomach or stomach ulcer

Vomiting is actually a symptoms for UCers as well as CDers, it may not be a common symptom but like with everything else, it varies from patient to patient...and you don't have to have CD in your stomach in order to have vomiting as a symptom...google vomiting and ulcerative colitis and you'll see tons of info that include vomiting as a symptom for IBD.

Thanks everyone.  I think it sounds more like Chrons.  The thing that is most worrisome to me is that sometimes he literally will throw up even water 2 seconds after taking a sip.  I told her to ask about Chrons because I know that it can affect the entire digestive system including the stomach.  I also read that people with Chrons can get blockages that cause everything to back up into the stomach.  He was prescribed Flagyl but that is the only thing she said he is taking other than anti-nausea meds.  He has an appointment this week.  Thanks again for your feedback!!!

I have Crohn's (crohn's colitis specifically which is when CD is affecting the colon) I've also had it affecting my small intestines as well, and I have never thrown up due to my Crohn's...although it may be okay to ask your friend to ask the doc about it being Crohn's, as I said above, vomiting can happen with either Crohn's or ulcerative colitis and there doesn't necessarily have to be a blockage issue either. Never hurts to rule things out but many docs seem to have a hard time these days DX the correct IBD that a patient is suffering and vomiting can be a symptom for either UC or Crohn's.  One other possibility is that it "could" be CD affecting his esophagus if he's throwing up from a few sips.
